~What dreams may come…

Visions of symbols, words, objects and people whom appear during sleep cycles can give us many messages. Some of mankind’s greatest creations, ideas and inventions have all been attributed to the attempts of interpreting and understanding dreams.

Dream Therapy is one of the oldest traditions for using dreams as a basis for both physical and psychological healing. The limbic system of our brain speaks in the language of symbols. Working with dream imagery in our waking state can help change perceptions and resolve conflicts, which are critical keys for mind-body healing.

Dream Therapy

In any particular culture, the meaning of dreams can vary in their vision and interpretation. One book, “Oneirocritia”,was written by Artemidorus- a Roman philosopher in the 2nd century A.D., has served as the foundation of many other dream interpretation books.

Psychologist Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud, who have both embrassed the important significance of dream interpretation, have given credit to Artemidorus’ work.  Freud, the father of psychoanalysis, interpreted people’s dreams in order to help them unearth hidden feelings. Jung, a Swiss psychologist, who initially followed in Freud’s footsteps, developed theories of Anima (women) and Animus (men) involving the feminine and masculine principles and the collective unconscious symbols known as Archetypes.

Dreams and the Brain Stem

In recent studies, the brain stem, the portion of the brain at the base of the skull, is the originator of electrical impulses in which, dreams are the result. The brain stem makes contact with the other portions of the brain that control hearing, movement, vision and memory. Several studies haveimplicated that the limbic portion of the brain, which activates our emotions, may also receive impulses from the brain stem. The brain stem contains cells that turn REM sleep on and off. These studies have been based on the use of Positron Emission Tomography (PET scans) of the brain.

Considering the brain as the main sorter of information, it tries taking random information from both our conscious and subconscious levels and attempts to impose patterns on the un-patterned stimuli.

Dreams and PET Scans

With the advancement of science in the 1950’s, many studies and theories were summarized on the physiological aspect of dreams. The discoveries of REM (rapid eye movement) and NREM (non rapid eye movement), which are the brain’s electrical activities during sleep, became apparent.  REM cycles four to five times a night during sleep and lasts less than 30 minutes per cycle for the first cycle but increases in length as each cycle progresses. This is the period when dreams occur. The other sleep cycles are spent in NREM sleep without dreaming.

Through extensive research, it was also discovered that birds and nearly all mammals, including newborn babies, experience REM sleep. People with emotional disturbances, those who have suffered trauma, and highly stressed individuals, seem to increase their dream time.

Dream Archetypes

Jung thought that dreams were a tool to help us grow, not just to release extreme sexual desires. It was Jung, a contemporary of Edgar Cayce’s, who found convincing evidence for a deeper level to the unconscious mind. This profound depth, Jung felt, came from a genuine spiritual reality that hadn’t been acknowledged by Freud. Jung called this level the “collective unconscious.” Here all minds could communicate through the use of universal symbols – images which seem to have a common meaning among people all over the world.

These Archetype patterns derive from a universal collective unconscious, which in metaphysics, is called the Grids – Akashic Records – Sea of Consciousness – creating our reality. In this context, archetypes are innate prototypes for ideas, which may subsequently become involved in the interpretation of observed phenomena.

Keeping A Dream Journal

A Dream Journal is a book or record of your past dreams. They can be used for writing down dreams you have experienced during sleep. Often people will even write down there day dreams too! These journals are good places to record your information so that you can go back and look at this information later. It can allow you to look at that information for interpretation and dream analysis.

Creating Your Journal

1. Upon waking, pick up your dream journal and write down the first thing that comes into your head.

2. It is a good idea to write out the dream in the symbols you saw for easier interpreting later.

3. After you have written down as many symbols as you can recall, try to fill in the information between the symbols.

4. Jot down significant words, objects, images or people that were in your dream.

5. What is the association with these objects, words or people. Explain in your journal.

6. Take as much room as you like in your book. It is a creative work in process.

7. If there were colors, write them down. Was it day or night? Did it take place in a familiar place or some place you have never been?  Explain.

8. If you can’t recall all the details, that is ok. You can always come back to the journal later.

9. Be sure and write the time and day on the top of the dream page.

10. When working with intuitive information , focus on an empty slate. Accept the process of receiving the information that comes in without judging or trying to understand it in the moment.

11. List what feelings you are holding on to. Are they negative or positive? Explain in your journal.

12. I feel it is important to keep a journal for several months. This will give you a better, overall picture of how the rhythm of your dreams may play a part in the cycles of YOUR life.

13. Learning to follow your intuition is essential to understanding what is at the root of all action. Find three things when interpreting your insight that makes it a stepping stone to the next level! List them now.

14. Make this journal your own! Buy or make a book that you are eager to go to each day. Use stickers, color, doodles that all express your journey to understanding yourself and others.

15. Consider keeping track of such things as your menstrual cycle, the fluctuation of your moods, emotions and libido. Write down any distinct dreams related to these rhythms or habits in your life.

16. Understanding and developing more awareness of your dreams will help strengthen your connection to your divine and higher consciousness.

17. As an exercise, you can write down repeating patterns on the back pages of your journal.  Then on the opposite side of the page, write down an archetype this may fall under. Under each pattern, set up positive and negative trait aspects.

18. Then, look up your archetype or repeated patterns.  Make notes beneath each column.

19. This creates an amazing “profile” page about yourself to add to your journal.  It is also great to look back on different traits and aspects of your personality.

20. Have sweet dreams!

Dreams and Color

When it comes to dreaming in color or black and white, science is still divided. Some scientists believe that 80% of our dreams are in color. They believe that these dreams of color happen later in the sleep cycle while black and white dreams occur earlier in the sleep stage. Others believe we never dream in black and white and believe that it is biologically impossible.

The colors in dreams convey different ideas based on our cultural differences. Although, universal dreams occur in all cultures, they express different meanings. Symbolism, (that right brain activity), color and interpretation are ultimately best transcribed by the individual. Here is a list of color and their interpretations.

Coping with Nightmares

Nightmares are very common among children and fairly common among adults. Contributing factors in the cause of nightmares include illness, stress, troubled relationships, traumatic experiences, emotional difficulties, drugs or medication.. However, some people have frequent nightmares that seem unrelated to their waking lives. Recent studies suggest that these people tend to be more open, sensitive, trusting, and emotional than average.

Traumatic events sometimes trigger a long lasting series of recurrent nightmares often diagnosed as part of PTSD, post traumatic stress disorder. These traumatic events are different from nightmares in that they repeat the same scene over and over for months, sometimes years.
