The term “Blue Moon” seems to have been attached to a familiar and common event in only the last 30 years. It does not even involve the color blue. When we can view a full moon two times in one calendar month, this is referred to as a “blue moon.”

Metaphysically, the Blue Moon represents our rare opportunity to fully express ourselves through communication and clarity of expression. The symbolic blue energy represents our Throat Chakra. Use this rare occasion to open up, relay your inner thoughts and creativity.

Consider a meditation with these stones.  Create a circle of stones on the floor or in your meditation room, on a yoga mat or in your sacred space or altar.  If the stones are on your altar or table, you can write your intention on a piece of paper and place it in the middle of the circle with your favorite stone on top.  You can sit in the middle of your stones. Here, you can choose one stone that calls to you and hold on to it or just sit or lie down comfortably in the circle.

Create an intention. A full (blue) moon is about manifesting your reality. It will give you an opportunity to be able to express yourself in any creative way you see possible. Your imagination is boundless. Your creativity unlimited.  Close your eyes. Take several deep breaths as you inhale (deep) then exhale out (twice as long). With your intention in mind, bring your focus to behind your eyelids. Allow your breath to follow you there.  Clear your mind of everything but your centered intention.

When you are ready, move your focus to your Third Eye. This is where you see everything. Let your mind’s eye expand your vision and insight.  Broaden the landscape so that you visualizing everything around you in a 360 degree panoramic view! Sense your intention expanding to fill this space. You are what you create. You create what you wish for. You wish for what you want. Now is your opportunity to express it and eventually manifest it. Make it happen. It is entirely up to you.

When you are ready, slowly reel your mental vision back to behind your Third Eye. Then slowly… move focus back to behind your eyelids.  Only when you are ready, open your eyes.  You may want to journal about your experience, writing down key symbols, ideas, images or words that were presented to you during your meditation. This allows you to look back afterwards to help with an interpretation of your message.

These are my favorite stones for a blue moon:

Blue Quartz has been used to help you discover or increase your understanding of your spiritual nature. It’s celestial color attunes us with the sky and the sea. It has a calming effect upon the mind and has historically been used to stimulate hope. It has an association with a blue moon as it is a good healing stone for linking heart with Throat Chakra and Third Eye Chakra to expand self expression and creativity. It is a stone often chosen for refining communication skills to a whole new level.  It is considered Yin in nature, so it has a calming, cooling passive approach in healing. Its color can generate a soothing effect on the mind/body connection, especially through meditation and contemplation.

Celestite gets its name from the sky. It’s gentle nature soothes nerves, reduces stress and quiets the mind. It is the perfect crystal to represent a blue moon, as it allows us to find serenity, harmony and easiness. It creates stillness for receiving, therefore allowing us connection to spirit, life overview and creativity. Celestite increases self-expression, artistic creativity and healing. This stone helps the Throat Chakra by allowing for honesty, openness and listening. The celestial blue color helps reduce stress, worry and anxiety. Celestite is an Aura cleanser. It assists in bringing our higher vibrations in order. This is a very spiritual stone, seemingly connected to the divine.

Dumortierite is the stone of tolerance and tranquility. It is a precious blue stone which promotes self-discipline, cleanliness, courage, trust, accomplishment, harmony, positive attitude, patience and tolerance. It highly reduces disorganization, scattered thinking and distractions. It helps make troublesome, daily tasks more tolerable. Dumortierite is said to promote a positive attitude to life and to help you to stay “young at heart”. It encouraging you to speak out when you feel you are being treated unfairly and to help you to see the good in the people who are around you. Two great reasons why it belongs on the Throat Chakra. It’s rich blue tone will induce relaxation, tranquility and a simple feeling of harmony. Dumortierite is a very spiritual stone. It is believed to facilitate communication with your angels and spirit guides and is a stone as rare as the blue moon it represents.

Labradorite is the symbol of vitality. This metallic iridescent stone brings forth each person’s strengths to share with the world. Helps one find their originality. This stone brings easier, more restful sleep as it has a very calming effect. This also make the stone a great stress reducer. Use as a worry/empowering stone and rub it Watch how beautiful it will sparkle with all the attention. Helps us relate to others. Opens energy flow to the Solar Plexus and Third Eye Chakra and whatever other centers are most in need. At the Third Eye Chakra it encourage deep insight, psychic ability and focused intuition. This shimmering stone of deep blue and indigo make it a mysterious and beautiful stone representing a blue moon.

Lapis Lazuli is the stone of ancient knowledge and wisdom. Lapis resonates on a very high, harmonious level as it brings peace and deeper understanding when looking inward. It therefore, encourages inner self-knowledge, encourages self-awareness and will show you inner truth, when you really choose to look. A wonderful stone to work with for self-acceptance. It’s deep blue color is like looking deep into an ocean of possibilities providing qualities of honesty, compassion and morality to the personality seeking balance. Lapis encourages creativity. It opens one up to self-expression, stimulating objectivity, clarity and self-realization. When used at the Throat Chakra, Lapis will help you in speaking the truth and therefore, inspires confidence

Moonstone is the quintessential crystal for the moon and honors the Goddess in all women. This stone helps women (and men) to be more comfortable with their gentler feminine/yin receiving side. This stone is also an excellent remedy for overly aggressive females or for men who need to connect to their more feminine/emotional side. Its connection to the moon has been documented for centuries. Because of its shimmering, glossy nature its color plays off the light as does the moon. Like the moon as it waxes and wanes, this reflective stone allows us the lesson that everything is a part of the cycle of change. Moonstone is considered the stone of “new beginnings”. Moonstone is most famous for balancing our emotional states. Emotional states are connected to the water element, which are connected to the cycles of the moon and tides. Moonstone helps cool, soothe and calm over-reactions to emotional and personal situations. It allows us greater flexibility and flow with life.

Selenite is a white to clear striated crystal that is a sheer source of calming, spiritual light. It works with the higher spiritual Crown Chakra in accessing our higher consciousness, spirit guides and the angelic realm. This shimmering stone resembles a full moon. Holding this crystal, you may visualize it bringing white light/energy (higher ideas/consciousness) from your transpersonal point above your head down through the body, out through the feet into the earth or physical plane. Just as the full moon’s reflective rays can do. Place on the Third Eye Chakra for obtaining stored information. This stone may help our physical and emotional letting go as it taps into the light body of the aura. It helps in expanding sensitivity and your field of awareness. Wonderful stone for boosting confidence and self-esteem. Use in energy grids for protection, wisdom and intuitive insight.

Sodalite is most recognized for its use in healing, meditation and wisdom. This a good stone for general communication for self and writing. It is used for expressing logic and ideas due to its connection with the Throat Chakra. It is also used at the Third Eye Chakra due to the fact that it can access fine levels of intuitive information and promote the understanding of these concepts. Sodalite can strongly affect changes in your attitude about yourself. It helps you be more objective and less critical about ways of dealing with existence.
