Knowledge

“O, light of moon of wisdom thyn,
Help to recall, O memory mine.
Open and clear mental repose
To help and study, recall and grow.
O wisdom, great familiar when,
Of knowledge, wise, insightful then
When sun is high, energy strong,
Please bring my concentration on.
Now I absorb the wisdom here,
And let go ~ unrelenting fear.”

The Metaphysics of Knowledge

Traditionally, metaphysics refers to the branch of philosophy that attempts to understand the fundamental nature of all reality, whether visible or invisible. It seeks a description so basic, so essentially simple, so all-inclusive that it applies to everything, whether divine or human or anything else. It attempts to tell what anything must be like in order to be at all.

I now know, first hand, what it is like to go back to school. Going back to follow my second passion, medicine, after a very successful and passionate career as a dancer/choreographer has been rewarding beyond belief. The first day of school can be a scary prospect for anyone, but adult students confront special concerns and fears.

Adults are more likely to have multiple responsibilities, requiring them to juggle commitments to school, family and employers. They may be haunted by negative earlier experiences with formal education, or worry about being “rusty.” Re-entry students may feel uncomfortable when surrounded by younger, technologically- savvy classmates. Previous drop-outs may be anxious about being able to complete the program this time around. While all of these concerns are legitimate, none are insurmountable.

Whatever your desire to learn is, here you can learn how to value the learning process, discover effective study tips, use antioxidants to boost your memory, get through classes and study time better with food for thought and learn certain mind games to broaden the mind, stimulate the brain and keep you young! You can also find crystals, aromatherapy and supplements to increase focus, concentration and memory!

Mind Games

Some of the best ways to engage your brain is by using your memory functions!

1. The number one rule is: Get off auto-pilot! Avoid brain shrinkage by expanding your emotional and mental capacity. Break up your routine. Switch it up. Do something different each day.

2. Memorize favorite poems, speeches or famous passages.

3. Read challenging books or articles that encourage you to expand your interests.

4. Learn something new whether it is a new language, the words to a song or a new recipe, this helps stretch the brain.

5. Practice other-handedness If you’re right-handed, try brushing your teeth or writing your grocery list with your left hand.

6. Play word games like crossword puzzles, sudoku and acrostics.

7. Test at your threshold. Testing yourself slightly beyond your capacity (80 percent right, 20 percent wrong) helps to increase brain neurons.

8. Get lost. Getting lost and then being able to find your way, by backtracking, reading a map or deducing, helps to increase memory.

9. Choose one new thing to learn everyday. You will greatly benefit your age/mind capacity, as you comprehend something new.

10. Stay optimistic, remaining so, enables higher cognitive function.

Food for Thought

Most researchers agree that the best way to protect your memory is to eat plenty of antioxidants and nutrients commonly found in fruits and vegetables. Brain cells are especially vulnerable to toxins because the brain generates more free radicals per gram of tissue than any other organ. Antioxidants also protect neurons by keeping blood vessels supple and open, ensuring the flow of nutrients to the brain.

In a study published by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, researchers tested people who ages ranged from 65 to 90 and discovered that the people with the best ability to memorize words and do mental arithmetic were those whose diets included the most fruits and vegetables. Coincidentally, the same group of people ate the least artery-clogging saturated fat. Of all the fruits and vegetables studied, blueberries and blackberries contain the most potent antioxidants, anthocyanins.

As well as eating a diet rich in antioxidants, taking extra vitamins can help preserve memory, especially as we age.

Try to maintain a meal schedule! At the start of your day, it is important to have a big high protein breakfast. This will jump start your metabolism, will not spike your blood sugar and will “feed the brain”. After class, if it is between breakfast and lunch, have a handful of nuts or good fats like cheese or yogurt with fresh or dried fruit.

Lunch is the balancing act! Students tend to load up of the simple carbs found in rice, white bread and processed soups and other canned foods, instead of the complex carbs found in beans and root vegetables. To keep your blood sugar from spiking and wanting to hit the pillow instead of class, go for the high protein and Omega rich options like tuna, salmon or sardines with beans, and root vegetables.

Study time can be a real distraction if you are hungry. Avoid the coffee, donuts, bagels and cookies and go with green or black tea, or herbal tea. Have handy a tray of fresh vegetables and fruit, cut and ready to eat. Drinking plenty of water will stave off hunger, keep you full, hydrated and awake. This kind of snacking will get you through your study time much quicker and with less distractions!

The Learning Process

I now know, first hand, what it is like to go back to school. Going back to follow my second passion, medicine, after a very successful and passionate career as a dancer/choreographer has been rewarding beyond belief. As an adult, we have jobs to juggle, kids, family and more! While all of these concerns are legitimate, none are insurmountable. Here is how to value your learning process…

Study Tips

Time is precious when you’re juggling multiple responsibilities. Make the most of what you’ve got by using your time effectively, developing your concentration skills and dealing with distractions. Use your time effectively: When are you at your most awake? Are you a morning person or a night-owl? Are you sleepy and distracted after lunch? Try to schedule study time during your peaks…

Memory Boosting Supplements

Start your day right with these memory boosting supplements that give you antioxidant power, anti-aging protection, a lift in energy and encourage your memory function. These supplements are some of the most scientifically researched for the nutritional support of cerebral function. They augment the vaso-regulating activity of arteries, enhanced cerebral circulation and improves functionality.

Crystals for Studying

The power behind Earth’s minerals can be felt the minute you put a crystal in your hands or near your physical body. Crystals are the treasures of the earth. These stones are filled with energy to be used. Crystals are a great meditation tool, guide for focus, and can help with time management. Put your fears aside, amerce yourself in your studies and use a few crystals to help you to bring awareness!

Self-Esteem Check List

Children (and adults) develop self-esteem by experiencing repeated successes. Those with learning and attention issues are at risk for low self-esteem. Although you may feel great about yourself in one area of your life, you may be extremely down on yourself in another. We can all seek to improve these issues. It is time you became committed to truly loving and appreciating yourself and who you are.

Essential Oils for Study

Today, scientists have turned their attention to the now very topical issue, sense of smell. They have are interested in the tie between scents and memory triggers. The olfactory membrane is the only place in the human body where the central nervous system is exposed and in direct contact with the environment. Consider these essential oils when you need to improve memory and concentration…

Music and Learning

The widely accepted belief that music helps students perform better academically is known as the “Mozart Effect.” This famous phrase was coined by a French researcher named Alfred A. Tomatis in 1991, in his book Pourquoi Mozart. After only seven years, it received considerable support in the United States with the publication of Don Campbell’s The Mozart Effect.

During Mozart’s very short life, he produced more than 600 published works including 15 masses, 49 symphonies, 20 operas, 17 organ sonatas, 26 quartets, 17 piano concertos, and dozens of other compositions for various combinations of instruments. Picking my top 20 was far from easy, but below is some of the most popular music he is recognized by.
