History: Malachite (Cu2CO3(OH)2) is a copper carbonate hydroxide mineral. This green banded mineral crystallizes in the monoclinic crystal system, often forming in grape-like, fibrous, or stalagmitic masses, within the space between rocks, deep underground, where the water table and naturally heated water containing a variety of elements, compounds and gases are dissolved. The stone’s name derives from the Greek “molochitis lithos” meaning, “mallow-green stone”. Malachite was given this name due to its resemblance to the leaves of the mallow plant.

In Egypt the color green was associated with death and resurrection, as well as, new life and fertility. The belief in the afterlife was thought to be free of pain and suffering and was often referred to as the “Field of Malachite”.

The Orme mines in Great Britain extensively mined malachite over 3,800 years ago using stone and bone tools. Evidence from archaeologists indicates that mining activity ended around 600 B.C.E with up to 1,760 tons of copper being produced from the malachite.

In the Timna Valley in Israel, malachite, along with copper were mined for over 3,000 years. Since then, malachite has been used as both an ornamental stone and as a gemstone.

Special Note: these particular tumblestones were used by Andrew in a solemn spiritual ceremony in Paris. They were divined at a burial mandala for the infamous spiritist, Allan Kardec. You can read more about Andrew’s Lunch with Allan Kardec!

Cleansing & Charging Malachite

~ Cleansing a crystal is always a good idea to rid it of energies (negative or otherwise) that it may have picked up during handling and excessive use.

~ Charging a crystal is bringing its energy levels back up, after use and cleansing. Like re-charging a battery after it has lost its energy.  A great way to do this (and remind you that it is time to do so) is during a full moon.

Crystal Cleansing: This stone should be cleansed of negative energy by wrapping it in a handkerchief and leaving it overnight on dry tumblestones. To charge, place malachite among quartz crystals. This can be done on a quartz cluster or a bowl of tumbled quartz.

The Power of Color

Color plays a major role in determining how your crystal can help you.  A crystal’s color is due to its combination of minerals, which give it it’s own personality.  It contributes in what attracts you to it.  The psychological aspects of color determine how a crystal’s healing properties work.
