"Pearls of wisdom for September"

A Change of Season

You’ve probably experienced fluctuating moods with the change of seasons, but there is good indication that your brain activity also differs based on the seasons.

A Belgian study, published in the journal “Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences“, finds that the brain utilizes its resources differently to perform the same cognitive tasks depending on what season it is.

Mood and immunity are well known to change with the seasons and there are indications that several brain aspect could also be seasonal.

In the Fall, memory recall, uses more brain activity. This new study is the first to show that brain activity related to “attention and memory” may also have a seasonal element.  In Autumn we see an increase in depression, anxiety and panic disorders as there is usually a considerable amount of rain. Also, daylight hours are reduced and this is a core factor in emotional problems.

Stretching & Yoga for Pain

Next to breathing and breath work, stretching is the most beneficial exercises we can do for better health. Done in tandem, breath work and stretching are the best support for easing aches, pain, tension, headaches, tight muscles and unexplained pain elsewhere in the body. Just as there are different types of flexibility, there are also different types of stretching.

Memory Boost for Fall

Start your day right with these memory boosting supplements that give you antioxidant power, anti-aging protection, a lift in energy and encourage your memory function. These are the most scientifically researched plant extracts and supplements for the nutritional support of cerebral function. They augment the vaso-regulating activity of arteries, capillaries, and veins to maintain healthy circulation.

Improving Constipation

Constipation results when food moves too slowly through the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. About 80 percent of people suffer from constipation at some time during their lives. Brief periods of constipation are normal. Constipation is usually diagnosed when bowel movements occur fewer than three times per week on an ongoing basis.

Treating A Sore Throat

A sore throat is sometimes a symptom of a more serious condition distinct from the common cold (such as strep throat) that may require medical diagnosis and treatment with appropriate antibiotics. If you do take antibiotics, remember to take acidophilus along with them or after your complete course to maintain normal intestinal flora. Try these great natural remedies.

Fall Harvest Bounty

When the crisp Autumn air hits my face I have a tendency (and desire) to discover all the new bounty of the Fall season right here in our local Farmer’s Market in New York City. Merchants come from local farms as well as, locations far outside NYC with their seasonal goods. As I stroll through the market, my eyes open wide as I catch all the wonderful, bright colors of the Fall fruits and vegetables.

Detoxing for Fall

The summer fun has taken its toll!  Maybe a little too much of this or too much of that!  Perhaps not as much exercise or lifting a beer can instead of some weights.  No worries!  It’s time to reset your body (and mind) and bring about a whole new (spiritual?) enlightening? Here is a great way to detox your “whole” body and feel better for it!

This is also the Autumn Equinox. In Celtic lore, Mabon, a Welsh son of the Divine Mother, was captured as a child and taken to the Otherworld. He was ultimately rescued and this sun festival celebrates the second harvest (or second chance). Autumn is a season of shadows and a time of waning light, but it is also a season of abundance, giving thanks and harvest. Celebrated all over the world.

Remedies for Autumn Dryness

Dryness is a common problem in Autumn. Dryness can manifest as constipation, dry throat, dry skin, dry eyes, dry brittle hair, thirst, and lack of sweat. Most people do not drink enough fluids regularly, let alone in the Autumn. Spicy food can cause or worsen dryness. Be careful not to get stuck in the vicious cycle of craving the same food that makes your symptoms worse!

Astrology of Trees

Using the lunar calendar, Celtic astrology unlocks your past life memories and other hidden mysteries. Each lunar calendar month, thirteen in all, is assigned a tree symbol. The tree’s energies are said to be revealed through the Tree Alphabet or the Ogham. The 13 sacred trees follow the 13 moons of the calendar year associating a tree with each of the months.

Autumn Elegance

Used for scenting the kitchen/any room with aromatherapy, inviting Fall, honor Halloween, or used as a love potion.

-Blend 2-4 cups of apple cider or apple juice with:
-1 apple cut into small pieces
-1 pinch of nutmeg -1 cinnamon stick

Slowly simmer on the stove. Allow the smell to permeate the room.

These are the quintessential scents of Autumn. They work well together and are always used to represent the season.

A Spicy Fall Blend

-Add 10 drops of Lavender
– 5 drops of ginger
– 3 drops cinnamon
– 2 quarts of water.

In a simmer pot, add the water.  Add your essential oils

Set your stove on extremely low to allow the steam to diffuse into the air. You can also do the same with a tea pot without a whistle.

Remember to always watch the stove and turn it off when no adults are present.

Fall Citrus Delight

– Add 10 drops of Bergamot
– 4 drops of Clove
– 3 drops of Cinnamon
– add to water in a diffuser.

Light a tea light under the oil to gently diffuse the scent into any room.

This is a great blend for stimulating conversation, setting an Autumn mood or celebrating the Harvest.  Try diffusing this during Thanksgiving or even children’s parties.  Keep flame away from kids and animals.
