Nuummite

Properties: This is a rare stone mined only in Nuuk, Greenland. It is considered the most ancient, as well as, the oldest stones on earth, dating back some 3 billion years. This luminescent stone has earned the nickname of Sorcerer’s or Magician’s stone based on its “age and wisdom“. It is believed to have an extremely quiet energy until called upon, when it “comes to life” encouraging physical transformation in the body, or an awakening, as opposed to grounding. This very much mirrors the way it lay dormant for billions of years until it was discovered in 1982. Believed to be unearthed when it was “needed the most”.

It is used as a stone for protection, giving us a sense of being familiar, open and aware. Nuummite allows us to access our inner gifts of personal strength, empowering intuition and clearing the way for insightful opportunities. Also used as a “gazing stone“, Nuummite helps us access our own “magic and self-mastery“. Therefore, when we tap into this self-discovery, we are able to dig deep, deep into our “earthly energies” to find what really matters and what connects us to this earthly plane. Hence, its connection to the Earth element. Understanding our “roots” gives us the power to connect to our center or Solar Plexus. Our Solar Plexus is the root of our intuition. This is why Nuummite is most associated with our Root Chakra, Solar Plexus Chakra and Third Eye Chakra.

History: Nuummite (Mg2)(Mg5)Si8O22(OH)2, is formed as a result of the transformation of existing rock or metamorphic rock. This Orthorhombic amphibole, also containing anthophyllite. is a mix of pyrite, pyrrhotine, chalcopyrite in a rich matrix of gedrite and anthophyllite. The nearby town of Nuuk, Greenland bestowed this stone its namesake “derived from Nuuk”. It’s dark brown to black coloring with flex of luminescent silver or pyrite allow it a certain intrigue making it very appealing to locals and healers alike. This stone was first discovered in 1810 in Greenland by the mineralogist K. L. Giesecke. It was defined scientifically by O. B. Bøggild between 1905 and 1924.   Nuummite is only found in Greenland. Due to its iridescent nature, this rare stone is sought after by gemstone dealers, collectors and those interested in the esoteric. It is often sold as a tumbled stone.  Nuummite’s volcanic origins give it its unique appearance, distinct coloration and healing energies.

Greenland’s aurora borealis or Northern Lights, reminds us of the earth’s electric beauty. This seemingly overwhelming auric energy of the earth is reflected off the atmosphere as solar waves pass overhead.

This “dancing of the sky”  intrigued the Inuit people, challenging their imagination. A well-known legend relates that when the northern lights would dance in the night sky, it meant that the dead were playing “football with a walrus skull.”  Today, certain groups think that children will be particularly intelligent if they are conceived in the magical glow of the northern lights.
