Fall represents a time of gathering. As an expression in nature, this is the time when crops are harvested. Leaves are changing to brilliant colors, the nights are becoming cooler and longer, as the days grow shorter. Gathering and elimination are the traits of this season and can be seen in nature, as well as human health.

This is a good time of year to be more conscious about and take care of the lungs, large intestine, and our skin, by nurturing them well. The change in weather affects our respiratory and immune system, so it is a good time to build up our defenses. Sometimes, we feel “stuck” in Fall, both emotionally and physically. Eating a diet with more fiber can help the large intestine to better move things along, while our mind must be clear and focused in order to process the emotional changes of the season. Our skin is our first line of defense, so keeping it moisturized and supple will both protect it and allow for a smoother transition during a time of colder more harsh weather ahead.

We can also look at Fall as a life marker or cycle in our lives. By the season of Fall, our lives have “turned a corner”. It is our third quadrant of development from our 50’s through our 60’s. This period in our lives represents an awareness of how life is perceived. The “new” ideas that come around now, tend to be seen through jaded eyes, as by now, we feel as if we have seen and done it all. Our caution comes as we seem to question more and take other things for granted much less.

Fall also represents a new-found knowledge of prosperity. It is often the time in our lives when we actually understand the basis of prosperity, not just being money or fame, but flourishing and thriving in our productive years. This suggests that “sensing” actually means the use of our perception in a much keener approach. We tend to be more observant and are more conscious of our intuition or 6th sense.

Fall is the raw, unprocessed information we take in and discern more directly and with immediate consciousness. We no longer take things for granted as we look for much deeper connections. We are more discerning in our relationships and have a better grasp at the art of sensuality.

In this season of our lives, we tend to switch to more left brain thinking or perform tasks that have to do with logic, such as making better informed decisions, comprehending our surroundings faster and seeing further ahead into our thoughts. These are steps out of the peak of our enthusiasm and into our waking consciousness. This is now the exact opposite of our “Spring”.

Fantastical Fall is the approach of our Autumn shadows. Shadows we start to see and feel, yet we simply push away or choose to ignore. These are shadows of darkness, aging, loss and death.

Gemstone: Approach to Fall
~ O harvest mother, bring us near,
a place of love when Fall is here.
To bless and honor hearth and home,
when chill comes round and changes so…

~ Andrew Pacholyk MS. L.Ac.

In each aspect of our lives, there are certain “priorities” we find important and tend to focus more on. This is often based on our age or need to fit in, our self-discovery or need to be recognized. Our priorities of life are the cornerstones we use to define ourselves, better understand who we are or are sometimes forced to recognize out of circumstance.

Our “Fall” priorities are focused more on the spiritual approach to life and how we can understand it. It is part intuition, part conscious thought. It is believing more in the metaphysical than the physical. It is taking in the better understanding of divination and intuition, the strength of forgiveness and the gathering of knowledge through journeys and therefore, enhancing our prosperity!
