Alder

4th Moon of the Celtic Year – (March 18 – April 14) (The Trailblazer) – Born pathfinder, explorer, risk-taker, doesn’t suffer fools. The Alder has associations with spiritual decisions, duty, prophecy, oracular strength, intelligence, mental prowess, resurrection, air magic, water magic, strength, spirituality, teaching, weather magic, and protection from outside forces.

Alder represents enthusiasm and bravery, which makes those born under this tree sign, excellent leaders. With fiery passion often gaining loyal followers to your cause. You are charming, gregarious and mingle easily with a broad mix of personalities. In other words, Alder signs get along with everybody and everybody loves to hang around with you.

The word for alder is derived from a word meaning “blood,” which refers to the red sap the tree produces when cut. This is why the tree is connected with karmic law and protection. It is also associated with battles and war, in part to this reason, hence the superstition against cutting down the alder tree, because it “bleeds.” This red pigment from the bark was once used as a dye and a for war paint. This red sap would also link the tree to the blood of the womb, often represented by the cauldron, a symbol of death and rebirth.

The fairies bring another link between the alder and magic by virtue of their own otherworld connection. Green is the color usually worn by fairies, and they are said to dye their clothing from the immature alder catkins, which produce a green pigment.

At the time of the Spring Equinox, or Ostara, the Alder is flourishing on riverbanks, roots in the water, bridging that magical space between both heaven and earth. The Alder month, called Fearn by the Celts, and pronounced fairin, is a time for making spiritual decisions, magic relating to prophecy and divination, and getting in touch with your own intuitive processes and abilities. Alder flowers and twigs are known as charms to be used in Faerie magic. Whistles were once made out of Alder shoots to call upon Air spirits, so it’s an ideal wood for making a pipe or flute if you’re musically inclined.
