Properties: Jet is a form of petrified wood similar to coal, though much harder. This stone has absorbing qualities. Helps draw out negative energy. Especially useful for people who have unreasonable fears that limit their lives. Therefore, that is why this black stone relates to the Root Chakra, the center that connects us to our earth energy. The Root Chakra is connected to survival and our trust in the physical world, and in one’s own body.

Jet has been used as a protective stone in life’s physical journeys. It’s known as a traveler’s amulet, and the wives of sailors often burnt it to protect their husbands while they were at sea. Jet has been known historically, to also protect from scorpions and snake bites, especially when the stone is wore over the heart. Jet has been used to help soothe the pain of both a broken heart due to separation or the loss or death of a relative or loved one. In the past, this protection stone has been used to ward against enemies, evil spirits, witchcraft and harmful magic spells.

Folk Remedies: Helps control mood swings and fights deep depression. Jet is a very light weight stone. This stone helps one to realize how life’s burdens can be “light weight” if we allow them to be. “Lifting the weight off your shoulders” is the goal of this stone. The main physical ailments that have been treated by Jet are arthritis and inflammation of the joints. In folk medicine, jet has also been used to treat bronchitis, colds and flu and headaches.

History: Jet is a (C) carbon based stone. Jet is actually of plant based materials compressed over time. This “low grade” form of coal, called lignite getting its name from the Latin word, linhum meaning wood. Jet has a close relationship to amber, both mineralogically and energetically. As they both come from being fossilized from resin. Often considered the black amber, this stone when rubbed with a cloth, will build up an electrical charge, attracting pieces of dust or paper, similar to amber. This stone has a long history of use. It was often associated with protection in the afterlife among both the Egyptian and Pueblo people. This stone can be traced back to the ancient times when the Romans mined this stone from Asia Minor in a town referred to as Gagates and the river Gagas Jet was used for ornamentation since the Bronze Age. Mined in the area of York, England since 1500 B.C.E used for jewelry. Used in throughout Spain and Europe for jewelry and talisman, Jet was carved into rosary beads and religious sculptures. It is used as a protective stone in the North American Indian culture. It was shaped into prayer beads and is still used for religious purpose by those of several Native American cultures. “Familiar” Meditation

Jet is used for protection. It brings our awareness back to the body and helps one maintain their sense of self.   In European folklore and folk-belief of the Medieval and Early Modern periods, familiar spirits (sometimes referred to simply as “familiars” or “animal guides”) were supernatural entities believed to assist witches and cunning folk in their practice of magic.  On the other hand, in the past, this protection stone has been used to ward against enemies, evil spirits, witchcraft and harmful magic spells.
