History: Chalcedony (SiO2) is a cryptocrystalline form of silica, which is composed of very fine inter-growths of quartz and moganite. Both silica minerals, quartz has a trigonal crystal structure, while moganite is monoclinic. This stone is a 6 – 7 hardness on the Mohs scale. Its waxy luster can have a semi-transparent or translucent look. It can be found in a wide range of colors, including shades of white, black, pink, red, blue, gray and brown.

Found in the US, Sri Lanka, USSR, Mexico and Brazil. The name “chalcedony” (pronounced kael-sedini) comes from the Latin chalcedonius and probably derived from the town Chalcedon in Asia Minor. The name first appeared in Pliny the Elder’s Naturalis Historia as a term for a translucid kind of Jaspis. The Greek word khalkedon appears in the Book of Revelation (Apc 21,19). Chalcedony was used in the Mediterranean region during the Bronze Age.

Found on Minoan Crete at the Palace of Knossos, in seals dating back to circa 1800 BC and various forms found along the Central Asian trade routes. At least three varieties of chalcedony were used in the Jewish High Priest’s Breastplate. (Moses’ brother Aaron wore the Breastplate, with inscribed gems representing the twelve tribes of Israel). Here is what you need: A glass container filled with about 12 ounces of water. If you are going to be placing your essence outside, be sure to cover it.   Read more here

Cleansing & Charging Chalcedony

~ Cleansing a crystal is always a good idea to rid it of energies (negative or otherwise) that it may have picked up during handling and excessive use.

~ Charging a crystal is bringing its energy levels back up, after use and cleansing. Like re-charging a battery after it has lost its energy.  A great way to do this (and remind you that it is time to do so) is during a full moon.

The Power of Color

Color plays a major role in determining how your crystal can help you.  A crystal’s color is due to its combination of minerals, which give it it’s own personality.  It contributes in what attracts you to it.  The psychological aspects of color determine how a crystal’s healing properties work.
