Happiness

“O. Bright light, open up my heart,
allow a smile to be apart,
of my day, today, always be,
a little more apart of me.
Like rising sun, upon each morn’,
the graces in my life, adorn.”

The Metaphysics of Happiness

Traditionally, metaphysics refers to the branch of philosophy that attempts to understand the fundamental nature of all reality, whether visible or invisible. It seeks a description so basic, so essentially simple, so all-inclusive that it applies to everything, whether divine or human or anything else. It attempts to tell what anything must be like in order to be at all.

A Formula for Happiness. What exactly makes us happy? Is happiness getting everything we want? Being rich and famous? Always getting your way? Being in a relationship? Being at the top of your game? Being healthy?

Greater personal fulfillment. This should really be the “full name” for happiness. Research by the Journal of Positive Psychology found that meaningful experiences, even if they were due to hard work or some stress, added up to stronger, personal relationships, making a positive difference and better self-expression for one’s own personal satisfaction (and happiness). As opposed to fleeting, less connected moments of joy or short term goal fulfillment. Another words, happiness comes from the long term goals of self awareness, making a difference in other’s lives and those things, which give us a sense of purpose! What ever your idea of happiness, research has found that a great deal of unhappiness stems from negative thoughts.

Tools for Happiness

A Formula for Happiness. What exactly makes us happy? Is happiness getting everything we want? Being rich and famous? Always getting your way? Being in a relationship? Being at the top of your game? Being healthy?

Life coach Pete Cohen, who co-wrote this study on happiness, developed this equation based on research done in Britain. Cohen suggest  “Most people probably don’t know what happiness is, they think happiness is perhaps having lots of money or a big car, or a big house. But people who have all these things are not necessarily happier than people who just enjoy their life.” This formula was worked out by psychologists after interviews with more than 1,000 subjects.

Happiness = P + (5xE) + (3xH)

P stands for Personal Characteristics, including outlook on life, adaptability and resilience.

E stands for Existence and relates to health, financial stability and friendships.

H represents Higher Order needs, and covers self-esteem, expectations, ambitions and sense of humor.

Are You Happy?

Ask yourself these questions. Each person who completes the questions ends up with a rating out of 100. The higher the score, the more happy they are. Here is how to work out the answer: The questions should be answered on a scale of one to ten, where one is “not at all” and ten is “to a large extent”

Add the scores for question #1 (one) and #2 (two) together to find your P value. The score for question #3 (three) is the value for E, and question #4 (four) for H:

1. Are you outgoing, energetic, flexible and open to change?

2. Do you have a positive outlook, bounce back quickly from setbacks and feel that you are in control of your life?

3. Are your basic life needs met, in relation to personal health, finance, safety, freedom of choice and sense of community?

4. Can you call on the support of people close to you, immerse yourself in what you are doing, meet your expectations and engage in activities that give you a sense of purpose?

Happiness = P + (5xE) + (3xH)

Remember, you do not need a formula to bring happiness into your life. Happiness is not just a life lived by accumulating moments of pleasure. Happiness is a rhythm, an order, a balance. We choose to be happy.

10 Tips for Happiness

What ever your idea of happiness, research has found that a great deal of unhappiness stems from negative thoughts. That is, not acknowledging what you have that is important in your life or mentally blocking yourself from the gratitude, humility and self-love or appreciation, that really shows you what happiness is, probably because you are too focused on negative thoughts.

The Gratitude Project

Expression of gratitude gives you a greater sense of purpose in life. Those who reflect a grateful attitude are less depressed, less stressed and realize all the good things that keep coming their way. This is the Law of Gratitude or the Law of Cause and Effect. Your thoughts are the Cause and reality the Effect. If you want to change your reality, you must change your thoughts.

Crystals for Happiness

Any crystal could make me happy…but actually, on a metaphysical level some of the best crystals for happiness include Amber, Calcite, Citrine, Gold, Moonstone, Quartz, Sunstone. They can be used to direct most kinds of power, energy and are used for physical healing or clearing of negative energies. Yellow, Gold and Orange are the colors of happiness and positive communication.

Create Your Happiness Journal

This Happiness Journal or Gratitude Journal, is a great way to bring the power of positive thought, good energy and a generous outlook back into your life!

A Happiness Journal can be used for writing down good thoughts you have experienced during the day or a good deed checklist! These journals are good places to record your positive outlook, your goals for achieving a path to happiness and your daily affirmation. It can allow you to look at that information later for inspiration and guidance.

1. Upon waking, choose or create a positive affirmation you will say throughout the day.
2. It is a good idea to write words such as I am, I can, I will.
3. Write down your positive perception of the world today.
4. Jot down significant words/phrases, that signify happiness to you, today. “My children”, “my great career”, “my respect for myself”.
5. What are you good at? Explain in your journal.

6. What do you find pleasure in? Write down each day, something new that you find pleasure in doing, seeing, smelling, hearing…
7. If there are colors, which you find happiness in, write them down. Wear that color today. Find that color in food and enjoy it. Carry that color around with you today. Look at it periodically. Yellow and Gold are the colors most associated with happiness.
8. Do you see failure as a stumbling block or a stepping stone? Find three things in failure that make it a stepping stone to the next level!
9. Be sure and write the time and day on the top of the Happiness page.
10. Make this journal your own! Buy or make a book that you are eager to go to each day. Use stickers, color, doodles that all express your happiness.
