Wonderful Winter: Dawn's New Light

~ “O darkest night of Yule’s light,
I come to honor in circle, bright
To contemplate in winter’s glow
This time when new beginnings grow.
To reach as sunlight does each day,
And cast-way shadow, dark and grey”

In the northern hemisphere, the Winter solstice is the day of the year when the Sun is farthest south. The winter solstice marks the first day of the winter season, December 212024 representing the longest night and shortest day of the year. At the time of this transition.

In Andrew’s newest book, Lead Us To A Place ~ your spiritual journey through life’s seasons, he likens the seasons to stages of our lives.  In the Winter of our lives, we tend to look within. We find a more introspective time that gives us the golden opportunity for self-power, self-healing, and self-balance. Andrew helps us to better cope with death, understand the maturity of our choices, and feel at peace with whom we’ve become.

We are reminded as to how living our lives along with nature can keep us in optimal health. Optimal health and well-being in winter calls for energy conservation, rest, the revitalization of body and spirit. Here are some wonderful suggestions for having a healthy winter:

Alternative Remedies for Winter

Winter is the season when we need to be more conscious about the kidneys, urinary bladder, adrenal glands, ears, feet hair. and nails.

The kidneys are associated with bone growth so it is important to nourish the bones through nutritional supplements and daily weight-bearing exercise.

Certain emotional disorders tend to be more prevalent in winter due to the lack of light. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) also called winter depression describe a form of depression that occurs in the winter months.

Cold and flu season is more prevalent due to the fact that we are confined indoors throughout the season. Impaired immunity to virus/bacteria, maintaining blood circulation and warmth, ensuring vitality of the lungs and reducing the build up of congestion in the body.

Also, people are more conscious of their bodies after the holidays and therefore, the New Year is a good catalyst to start loosing weight, stop smoking or considering a healthy detox program. Andrew also offers up the best winter survival tips.

Essential Oils for Winter

Bergamot (Citrus bergamia): Bergamot is uplifting sweet with a fruity fragrance. Helpful for depression. Refreshes a room.

Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus) European settlers quickly adopted it as medicine. You can also use a few drops of eucalyptus oil in boiling water or in a bath as an inhalant.

Juniper Berry (Juniperus communis): Juniper Berry essential oil are also found in other winter season oils including pine, cypress and fir needle. It is refreshing, clarifying and uplifting to the spirit.

Lemon (Citrus limonum): Lemon is a fresh sunny scent that is cold pressed from the rind itself! Diffuse it in your house for a fresh alternative to air spays.

Orange (Citrus sinensis): helps spreads sunshine on gloomy thoughts and depression, has a very comforting and warming effect and dispels tension and stress and helps revive when feeling low on energy.

Peppermint (Mentha piperata): Peppermint oil is the most extensively used of all the volatile oils, both medicinally and commercially. Brightens any room and also adds to its power of relieving pain and cramps.

Great Winter Gifts

Celebrating Yule

This is also the Winter Solstice. This is the time of the rebirth of the Sun God. It is the longest night (or shortest day) of the year, but yet it is filled with the promise of lengthening days of light to come. The winter solstice has long been celebrated as the birth of the sun, of light, of life itself. It is a time for introspection, contemplation and planning for the future. Yule means “Yoke of the Year”, celebrated as the seed time of the year, the longest night and birth time of the new Sun King OR Son of God. Celebrated all over the world and in different cultures including the festival of Winter Solstice and the Christian festival of Christmas (US, Ireland, Britain, Europe), Yule (North Germanic, Scandinavians).

Winter: Food For Thought

When eating along with the seasons, there are two elements that should be taken into account. The nature” of the food and the “flavor” of the food. The nature of the food refers to the foods innate temperature ie: cold, hot, warm, cool or neutral. Eating a moderate amount of all flavors sweet, salty, pungent, bitter and sour can help to keep your body balanced and regulated.

Winter Emotions

Winter is the greatest of the yin cycle when the daylight is less and the nights are longer. Winter is ruled by the Water element and is expressed in nature, as well as in the body. Fear and depression are more prevalent during this season often due to the passing of seasons, the change in light and the difficulty associated with staying indoors for longer periods of time. Winter Detox

Detoxifying is the process of releasing accumulated toxins and waste products that build up throughout our system. From birth, we are bombarded by toxins, externally from environmental sources. Internally, our organs give off waste products that accumulate in our body. Imbalanced emotions also play a part in polluting our system with excess chemicals such as free radicals, homocysteine and cortisol.

Sounds of Winter

Music Therapy utilizes music and music related activities to modify ineffective learning patterns, help to promote emotional, mental, social and physical growth. Music is a magical medium and a very powerful tool. Music subtly bypasses the intellectual stimulus in the brain and moves directly to our subconscious. Find music, books and healing tools that are just right for your mood and don’t forget to download Winter MP3s from Andrew’s Winter Mood Playlist.
