A house in Vedic Astrology or "Bhavas" is a place in the sky where the planets reside. The sky is divided into 12 houses consisting of 30 degrees each. In the Vedic system each house is equivalent to one sign. They are numbered from the left side counterclockwise around the chart. The houses of the horoscope represent different areas of life, described in terms of physical surroundings as well as personal life experiences. The placement of a planet or zodiac sign in a house will determine, to a large degree, the area of life in which it acts, and the goals and activities on which its drive or impulse will be focused. Each of the houses represents an area of your life. The planets tell you what energy is involved and the signs indicate how that energy will express. The houses tell you where in your life the effect will be felt. All areas of experience can be found in one of the houses.

The Elements and Aims Of Life

In Vedic Astrology, each house is related to one of the four elements. The twelve houses can be divided into four groups:

* Air - Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius - houses (3, 7, 11)

The elements and houses also correspond to one of the four Aims of Life, or "Purusharthas" In Hinduism, Purushartha (Aims Of Life) refers to a goal, end or aim of human existence.

* Dharma: (religious, social and/or moral) righteousness, both spiritual and ritual
* Artha: (material and/or financial) prosperity as well as pursuit of meaning
* Kama: (material) pleasure of any kind
* Moksa: (spiritual) liberation; or renunciation and detachment

The flow of the houses through the signs represent a pattern of development. The highest house number in each grouping or triad represents the fullest and most powerful expression of energy in that group. For example, the 9th house is the fullest expression of the Fire/Dharma houses (1, 5, 9); the 10th house is the fullest expression of the Earth/Artha houses (2, 6, 10); the 11th house is the fullest expression of the Air/Kama houses (3, 7, 11); and the 12th house is the fullest expression of the Water/Moksa houses (4, 8, 12).

The cycles of the moon are important when doing any kind of empowerment work in order to manifest what we want in life. When working with the energy of natural cycles, you are likely to get better results with the cycles of the moon since they have great power over the tides of our emotions..

This lunar influence is not a constant, unchanging thing, however, and an understanding of the basic lunar cycles can help us to understand how these cycles influence our lives. The moon orbits the earth about every 29 days, and this first cycle is the one most people are familiar with. The moon is illuminated by sunlight, the giver of all warmth, light, and life in our solar system, but we can't always see the part being lit. As the moon goes around the earth, we see the moon from different angles. When we see a full moon, the moon is directly opposite the sun, when we see no moon, its because the moon and sun are in the same direction.

*When the moon is WAXING, this is when it is growing toward a full moon, it is time to do empowerment work in manifesting, expanding and growth. Use this time for developing a clear, practical plan, lose all hesitation and move forward.

*When the moon is FULL, that is considered the highest time for manifesting goals, nurturing your passions, full scale healings, encouraging strength and power, love, knowledge, legal undertakings, money and dreams. It is the most potent time for rituals for prophecy, protection, divination and any manifesting work that needs extra power.

*When the moon is WANING, this is when it is shrinking after a full moon, it is time to do empowerment work in diminishing, decreasing and dissipating. Apogee:  the point in the orbit of the moon or an artificial satellite most distant from the earth. Perigee:  the point nearest the earth in the orbit of the moon or of a satellite.

It is important to work WITH the cycles of the moon. To do otherwise, would feel like a fish who is trying to swim upstream, against the current. Once you accustom yourself to the cycles of the moon, you will be able to use that energy for more than just empowerment work.

Moon Names and Traditions

Full Moon names date back to Native Americans, of what is now the northern and eastern United States. The tribes kept track of the seasons by giving distinctive names to each recurring full Moon. Their names were applied to the entire month in which each occurred. There was some variation in the Moon names, but in general, the same ones were current throughout the Algonquin tribes from New England to Lake Superior. European settlers followed that custom and created some of their own names. Since the lunar month is only 29 days long on the average, the full Moon dates shift from year to year.

The Hindu, Thai, Hebrew, Islamic, Tibetan, Mayan, Neo-pagan, Germanic, Celtic, and the traditional Chinese calendars are all based on the phases of the Moon. None of these calendars, however, begins its months with the full moon. In the Chinese, Jewish, Thai and some Hindu calendars, the full moon always occurs in the middle of a month

Full Moons are traditionally associated with temporal (temporary) insanity (hence the terms lunacy and lunatic) insomnia, and various "phenomena". Psychologists, are divided when it comes to the effects of the moon on human behavior. They find that studies are generally not consistent, with some showing a positive effect and others showing a negative effect.

Full Wolf Moon - January - Amid the cold and deep snows of midwinter, the wolf packs howl hungrily outside Indian villages. Therefore, the name for January's full Moon. Full Snow Moon - February - Since the heaviest snow usually falls during this month, native tribes of the north and east most often called February's Storm Moon or Full Snow Moon. Some tribes also referred to this Moon as the Full Hunger Moon, since harsh weather conditions in their areas made hunting very difficult. Known to the Celts as the Moon of Ice and the Chinese as the Budding Moon, this comes. Full Worm Moon - March - As the temperature begins to warm and the ground begins to thaw, earthworm casts appear, heralding the return of the robins. The more northern tribes knew this Moon as the Full Crow Moon, when the cawing of crows signaled the end of winter; or the Full Crust Moon, because the snow cover becomes crusted from thawing by day and freezing at night. The Full Sap Moon, marking the time of tapping maple trees, is another variation. To the settlers, it was also known as the Lenten Moon, and was considered to be the last full Moon of winter. Full Pink Moon - April - This name came from the herb, moss pink or wild ground phlox, which is one of the earliest widespread flowers of the spring. Another name for this month's Moon was the Full Hay Moon or the Meadow Moon because the meadows are at their greatest point of growth in this month, and it is a time for hay cutting. Full Sturgeon Moon - August - The fishing tribes are given credit for the naming of this Moon, since sturgeon, a large fish of the Great Lakes and other major bodies of water, were most readily caught during this month. A few tribes knew it as the Full Red Moon because, as the Moon rises, it appears reddish through any sultry haze. It was also called the Green Corn Moon or Grain Moon. Full Corn Moon - September - This full moon's name is attributed to Native Americans because it marked when corn was supposed to be harvested. Most often, the September full moon is actually the Harvest Moon, which is the full Moon that occurs closest to the autumn equinox. In two years out of three, the Harvest Moon comes in September, but in some years it occurs in October. At the peak of harvest, farmers can work late into the night by the light of this Moon. Full Harvest Moon - October - This full Moon is often referred to as the Full Harvest or Hunter's Moon, Blood Moon, or Sanguine Moon. Many moons ago, Native Americans named this bright moon for obvious reasons. The leaves are falling from trees, the deer are fattened and it's time to begin storing up meat for the long winter ahead. Because the fields were traditionally reaped in late September or early October, hunters could easily see fox and other animals that come out to glean from the fallen grains. Full Beaver Moon - November - This was the time to set beaver traps before the swamps froze, to ensure a supply of warm winter furs. Another interpretation suggests that the name Full Beaver Moon comes from the fact that the beavers are now actively preparing for winter. It is sometimes also referred to as the Frosty Moon. Full Cold Moon - December - During this month the winter cold fastens its grip, and nights are at their longest and darkest. It is also sometimes called the Moon before Yule. The term Long Night Moon is a doubly appropriate name because the midwinter night is indeed long, and because the Moon is above the horizon for a long time. The midwinter full Moon has a high trajectory across the sky because it is opposite the low Sun. December 22 is Yule, the winter solstice, a sun festival, celebrating the return of the sun. Since the Sun does not move into each sign at exactly the same time every year, if you were born on a cusp, you will find that you have qualities of the two signs that you straddle. The sign that you were actually born under, however, will always have the stronger influence.

Decanate: is a subdivision of a sun sign. Every sun sign in divided into three parts: First Decanate, Second Decanate, and Third Decanate. The 360-day calendar year is broken into 10 day segments. The zodiac is a 360 degrees circle, each sign consists of 30 degrees of the zodiac. Each decanate, therefore 10 degrees of the zodiac circle. Each decanate, then, is 10 days long. (Keep in mind, the 10 days are an approximation, as we do not have 360-day calendars). If you were born within the first 10 days of your sun sign, you were born in the First Decanate. If you were born in the 11th-20th day, you were born in the Second Decanate. You were born in the Third Decanate if you were born in the 21st - 30th day of your sun sign. Each decanate has its own qualities. Just as each sun sign has a planetary ruler, each decanate has one as well. These are called planetary subrulers because they do not override the entire sun sign’s planetary ruler. Your decanate individualizes the characteristics of your particular time of birth.

Elements: are the four astrological elements of air, earth, fire and water. In astrology, the attributes of one of these elements are associated with each sign. Given that there are twelve signs in the zodiac and four elements, each astrological element is associated with three zodiac signs and these signs share some common characteristics because of their common element.

Moon Sign: is the sign of the zodiac that the moon occupied when you were born, where you were born.

Rising Sign: is the zodiac constellation that was on the horizon (ascendant) where you were born (latitude and longitude), on the exact date, and precise time you were born. Knowing your rising sign will provide greater insight. Any personal astrology forecast based upon your natal chart will illuminate your rising sign for you.

Sun Sign: sun sign indicates which constellation of the zodiac the sun occupied when you were born. Though it is the most popular and familiar of your astrological signs, in fact it is only part of your astrological makeup.
