Vedic Astrology: Our Moon Power
The sign occupied by the Moon at your time of birth is an indicator of your emotional and physical nature. It describes your unconscious, instinctive reactions, what is innate. Moon signs define our emotions and make up the unconscious side of our personality. This is the place where we go to find comfort, peace and childhood memories. These signs also have an affect on our senses, such as sight, smell, taste, hearing and touch. They are all connected to our subconscious memories and affect us differently than the Sun's Zodiac signs, by showing us what kind of experience we need in order to feel emotionally satisfied.
Moon Signs play an important role in understanding an individual. The position of the moon in your birth chart helps in finding your moon sign. Your moon sign can help in understanding the characteristics and features when born under a particular moon sign, which is different from the sun signs in western astrology.

 Astrological Houses
A house in Vedic Astrology or "Bhavas" is a place in the sky where the planets reside. The sky is divided into 12 houses consisting of 30 degrees each. In the Vedic system each house is equivalent to one sign. They are numbered from the left side counterclockwise around the chart. The houses of the horoscope represent different areas of life, described in terms of physical surroundings as well as personal life experiences. The placement of a planet or zodiac sign in a house will determine, to a large degree, the area of life in which it acts, and the goals and activities on which its drive or impulse will be focused. Each of the houses represents an area of your life. The planets tell you what energy is involved and the signs indicate how that energy will express. The houses tell you where in your life the effect will be felt. All areas of experience can be found in one of the houses.

The Elements and Aims Of Life
In Vedic Astrology, each house is related to one of the four elements. The twelve houses can be divided into four groups:
* Fire - Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius - houses (1, 5, 9)
* Earth - Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn - houses (2, 6, 10)
* Air - Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius - houses (3, 7, 11)
* Water - Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces - (4, 8, 12)
The elements and houses also correspond to one of the four Aims of Life, or "Purusharthas" In Hinduism, Purushartha (Aims Of Life) refers to a goal, end or aim of human existence.
* Dharma: (religious, social and/or moral) righteousness, both spiritual and ritual
* Artha: (material and/or financial) prosperity as well as pursuit of meaning
* Kama: (material) pleasure of any kind
* Moksa: (spiritual) liberation; or renunciation and detachment
The flow of the houses through the signs represent a pattern of development. The highest house number in each grouping or triad represents the fullest and most powerful expression of energy in that group. For example, the 9th house is the fullest expression of the Fire/Dharma houses (1, 5, 9); the 10th house is the fullest expression of the Earth/Artha houses (2, 6, 10); the 11th house is the fullest expression of the Air/Kama houses (3, 7, 11); and the 12th house is the fullest expression of the Water/Moksa houses (4, 8, 12).
Fire: (Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius) exhibit righteousness. Aries, Leo and Sagittarius have their own way of reacting to their feelings when the moon is in the fire sign. Aries are very self assured, sure of their own actions trust in other peoples competence. For Leo, they make those under this sign attention seekers that tend to dramatize, but they are very deeply passionate when expressing emotion. For Sagittarians, their astrology moon sign tends to make them move around and explore. They also tend to take their own feelings and apply them to religion. The Fire signs are the true warriors. They demonstrate courage, fortitude, zeal and pugnacity. Fire represents the Dharma Houses. These are houses of purpose and meaning.

They tend to keep their feelings to themselves, making this the most complicated sign of all.

Their moon sign makes them avid talkers to get their feelings known. Libra's can please and appease. People born under this astrological moon sign have a deep feeling to be accepted. The Three Qualities
Each house is related to one of the three qualities or modes: Cardinal, Fixed and Mutable. These are also called the Angular, Succedent, and Cadent houses. Each quality has 4 houses.
 |
Cardinal Signs
The Cardinal Signs take action. The houses associated with this quality are (1, 4, 7, 10). They charge right in and get the job done. The Cardinal Signs show where in your life you will tend to take action. They are the instigators; ready to forge ahead with plans, and attract those that can support their efforts. Cardinal signs are leaders, and tend to be outgoing because they're engaged with the world in a dynamic way. As the first, they're positioned at the start of the season. This gives someone with a cardinal Sun sign, the force of the beginning, before energy has begun to dissipate. Cardinal signs often set the tone, and this occurs at the outset of each season. As the "scout signs" which generate the seasons, cardinal signs govern creativity. These signs are restless, active, self-motivated, ambitious, and they often are the leaders in their communities
The four cardinal signs are:
Aries: the Sun's passage through which begins the spring in the northern hemisphere, and the autumn in the southern hemisphere. Cardinal Fire (Aries) is a catalyst, a firebrand that inspires others by being totally committed to his/her own vision.
Cancer: which begins the summer in the northern hemisphere, and the winter in the southern hemisphere. Cardinal Water (Cancer) leads by the heart, and casts a palpable emotional force that pushes into new territory, but does it sideways like the crab.
Libra: which begins the autumn in the northern hemisphere, and the spring in the southern hemisphere. Cardinal Air (Libra) initiates through new ideas, and by being a balancing force among people.
Capricorn: which begins the winter in the northern hemisphere, and the summer in the southern hemisphere. Cardinal Earth (Capricorn) has a formidable, grounded presence, and a natural authority from being masters of the physical plane.

Fixed Signs
The Fixed Signs like stability. The houses associated with this quality are (2, 5, 8, 11). They want to own things. They want to be the boss and let the cardinal signs run things for them. Fixed Signs are stubborn, fixed in position. They frequently take longer to start, but they never seem to stop. Fixed Signs want everything else to move around them while they sit still. They want to maintain, uphold and defend positions, responsibilities, goals or desires in everyday situations. These signs are the least welcoming of change. They can be a bit stubborn or stuck in a rut, a down side of their ability to stay the course. These signs are valued for their consistent, loyal, devoted, reliable and patient natures. They hold strong opinions and at times they can be inflexible, but there are some areas in life that those traits are needed and even encouraged. The Fixed Signs show where in your life you will tend to stand fast under pressure. The gift of fixed signs is that they can stick with something to the end. But it's hard for them to let go, even when something appears to be a lost cause. Fixed signs are a marvel when it comes to getting things done. Because of this they're often able to enjoy success in whatever they set their minds to.
The four fixed signs are:
Taurus: For Fixed earth, (Taurus) digs into the earth, builds with real elements to construct a solid life.
Leo: For Fixed fire (Leo) this can mean a career of self-expression, and ongoing respect in their chosen fields.
Scorpio: For Fixed water (Scorpio), permanence is found through achievement, and going deep into the timeless mysteries of the imagination, dreams, primal sexuality.
Aquarius: For Fixed air, (Aquarius) fixes on a continuum that reaches into the future, and can doggedly push for reform, or spend a lifetime on their personal inventions.
|
 |
Mutable Signs
The Mutable Signs are more adaptable and deal more easily with change. The houses associated with this quality are (3, 6, 9, 12). The adaptability of mutable signs makes them light on their feet in a crisis. They travel well in and among different types of people, exchanging ideas on what to do next. With quickly evolving natures, they understand change intimately, and are at home in chaos.
Mutable signs experience the sense of multiple selves, and sometimes struggle to feel real and solid in themselves. Their sense of identity is loose, and like a kaleidoscope, always changing. But over time, a core sense of self emerges, based on this changeability, but transcending it, too.
The four mutable signs are:
Gemini: between the spring and summer seasons. Mutable air (Gemini) rides the circuits of ideas, taking in and disseminating what it collects.
Virgo: between the summer and autumn seasons. Mutable earth (Virgo) changes through purification of the body and by being a force of healing for others.
Sagittarius: between the autumn and winter seasons. Mutable fire (Sagittarius) evolves through learning, travel, seeking knowledge and using intuition to glean the truth from all this experience.
Pisces: between the winter and spring seasons. Mutable water (Pisces) dwells in the collective depths, and contains all the signs as the last one.

 Astrological Planets
There are 9 planets in Vedic astrology. Precious and semi precious stones have power as good receivers of these planet's energies and are associated with each one. Also, each planet signifes a specific body system/organ and influences them. To Vedic astrologers, the planets represent basic drives and impulses within the human psyche. These drives express themselves as different qualities throughout the twelve signs and in different cycles of life through the twelve houses. How exactly the planets manifest themselves also depends on their relationship to each other in the sky as seen from Earth. The patterns that the planets make in the sky reflect the ebb and flow of basic human impulses, just like the moon.

Rahu is the point in the sky called the north lunar nodes. The (ascending) node is the north point where the orbit of the Moon crosses the ecliptic. In the ancient Indian text "Bhagavat Purana", Rahu became the head of the dragon. Rahu represents that karma which causes our worldly desires, externalizing energies that push us forward or even cause us to overextend ourselves. It is only natural that if Rahu indicates worldly desires, it is capable of giving power, fame, political success, money, and beauty. Like most desires, they are insatiable and therefore, happiness or satisfaction may not necessarily result from the attainment of these benefits.

Ketu |
 Cat's Eye (protection) |
health issue (accidents, imbalances) |
Ketu is the point in the sky called the south lunar nodes. The (descending) node is the south point where the orbit of the Moon crosses the ecliptic. In the ancient Indian text "Bhagavat Purana", Ketu became the tail of the dragon. Ketu indicates difficult personal karma such as long term addictions, compulsions, deep-seated, introverted and internalized karmas that are less open and outgoing. Its positive side shows karmic accomplishment such as those skills and abilities which we have perfected in previous lives which we bring into this life fully developed. For this reason those souls who are born with great abilities, such as natural psychics, healers, those with musical or mathematical skills, will have a prominent South Node. * * * |
The cycles of the moon are important when doing any kind of empowerment work in order to manifest what we want in life. When working with the energy of natural cycles, you are likely to get better results with the cycles of the moon since they have great power over the tides of our emotions..
This lunar influence is not a constant, unchanging thing, however, and an understanding of the basic lunar cycles can help us to understand how these cycles influence our lives. The moon orbits the earth about every 29 days, and this first cycle is the one most people are familiar with. The moon is illuminated by sunlight, the giver of all warmth, light, and life in our solar system, but we can't always see the part being lit. As the moon goes around the earth, we see the moon from different angles. When we see a full moon, the moon is directly opposite the sun, when we see no moon, its because the moon and sun are in the same direction.
"As without, so within". Knowledge of the basic cycles of life is an understanding of the forces that motivate and drive us; the forces that affect our lives.
*When the moon is NEW, this is considered the time of birthing. Birthing new ideas, intention and seeding new ventures. This is also called the dark of the moon. This time also marks the beginning of a major new cycle in your life. It is not yet a definitive seperation with the past, but it is a time when old familiar patterns lose energy and you instinctively feel an impulse for creating new beginnings. Setting your intentions and releasing them out to the Universe to manifest and express.
*When the moon is WAXING, this is when it is growing toward a full moon, it is time to do empowerment work in manifesting, expanding and growth. Use this time for developing a clear, practical plan, lose all hesitation and move forward.
*When the moon is FULL, that is considered the highest time for manifesting goals, nurturing your passions, full scale healings, encouraging strength and power, love, knowledge, legal undertakings, money and dreams. It is the most potent time for rituals for prophecy, protection, divination and any manifesting work that needs extra power.
*When the moon is WANING, this is when it is shrinking after a full moon, it is time to do empowerment work in diminishing, decreasing and dissipating. This is a time to complete old projects and let go of strategies and situations that aren't working. This is an important time for reversing circumstances, releasing old ways of thinking, removing unwanted negative energies, along with addictions, illness, or oppressive belief systems.
|
Waxing: to show a progressively larger light surface, as the moon does in passing from new to full.
Waning: the period of the decrease of the moon's illuminated visible surface.
Gibbous: more than half but less than fully illuminated. Used of a celestial body, as the moon.
Crescent: the figure of the moon as it appears first quarter, with concave and convex edges terminating in points.
Apogee: the point in the orbit of the moon or an artificial satellite most distant from the earth.
Perigee: the point nearest the earth in the orbit of the moon or of a satellite. |
It is important to work WITH the cycles of the moon. To do otherwise, would feel like a fish who is trying to swim upstream, against the current. Once you accustom yourself to the cycles of the moon, you will be able to use that energy for more than just empowerment work.
The Cycles of Nature are also seen within the days of the week and times of day. By working within this framework, you are creating, to your greatest advantage, the most powerful intent possible.

A Lunar Journal , is a great way to bring the power of your thoughts, good energy and a generous way to express your true insight on paper. This journal can be used for writing down situations and how you have experienced them. These journals are good places to record your outlook, your goals for achieving a path to your truths and your daily affirmation. It can allow you to look at that information later for understanding inspiration and guidance.
Creating Your Workbook
1. The moon goes through eight distinct phases. Four of these (new, full, waxing, waning) are particularly important when manifesting with the energetics of the lunar cycle.
2. You can divide your journal into 4 or 8 sections. It is a good idea to write key words associated with each section.
3. As the moon passes through each phase, write about your own perceptions and insights. Consider writing a paragraph or so about how you feel emotionally, key thoughts or anything unusual or unique that might have happened to you during this time.
4. When working with intuitive information , focus on an empty slate. Accept the process of receiving the information that comes in without judging or trying to understand it in the moment.
5. List what feelings you are holding on to. Are they negative or positive? Explain in your journal.
6. Now, learn about the power of the rhythm of these feelings. Do not assume anything. Write down each day, something new that you find as an instinctual action of doing, seeing, saying, hearing...
7. I feel it is important to keep a lunar journal for several months. This will give you a better, overall picture of how the rhythm of the moon plays a part in the cycles of YOUR life.
8. Learning to follow your intuition is essential to understanding what is at the root of all action. Find three things when interpreting your insight that makes it a stepping stone to the next level! List them now.
9. Be sure and write the time and day on the top of the page.
10. Make this journal your own! Buy or make a book that you are eager to go to each day. Use stickers, color, doodles that all express your journey to understanding yourself and others.
11. Consider keeping track of such things as your menstrual cycle, the fluctuation of your moods, emotions and libido. Write down any distinct dreams.
12. Understanding and developing more awareness of lunar cycles will help strengthen your connection to your divine and higher consciousness.

A memory from my past, a plate of black and whites my mom would make for our family. Black and white cookies probably originated in central New York (where they're called half-moons) at a Utica bakery, called Hemstrought's.

1 cup unsalted butter
1 3/4 cups white sugar
4 eggs
1 cup milk
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
4 cups confectioner's sugar
1/3 cup boiling water
1 (1 ounce) square bittersweet chocolate, chopped
Directions:
1.Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Butter 2 baking sheets.
2.In a medium bowl, cream together butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in eggs one at a time, then stir in the milk, vanilla, and lemon extract. Combine cake flour and all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt; gradually blend into the creamed mixture. Drop tablespoonfuls of the dough 2 inches apart on prepared baking sheets.
3.Bake until edges begin to brown, about 20 to 30 minutes. Cool completely.

Living my life in New York City and being an acupuncturist, I was introduced to The Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival or Mooncake Festival, as a popular lunar harvest festival celebrated by the Chinese and Vietnamese people. The celebration became popular during the early Tang Dynasty. A written collection of rituals of the Western Zhou Dynasty describes this festival from 3,000 years ago. The festival is held on the 15th day of the eighth month in the Chinese calendar, which is in September or early October in the Gregorian calendar, close to the Autumnal equinox. The "Moon Festival" is celebrated yearly and is a time to share stories, read and write poetry and eat moon cakes.
These are round cakes made of flour, brown sugar and stuffed with sweets. Depending on the location, different kinds of filling were used. The north would use white sugar paste and brown date paste, where in the south they would use ham, dates or preserved apricots, walnuts, lard or watermelon seeds.
Moon Cake Recipe
This recipe for Mooncakes comes from Shanghai. Originally made in moon cake
molds with imprints such as chrysanthemum pattern or other traditional Chinese
characters. They should be about three inches in diameter.
Before baking - invent and draw your own "traditional patterns".
Ingredients:
4 cups flour
4 tbsp. brown sugar
half tsp. salt
4oz margarine
1 egg
1 tsp. sesame oil
For the filling:
2 tbsp. peanuts
2 tbsp. sesame seeds
2 tbsp. walnuts or pine nuts
2 tbsp. chestnuts, boiled until tender, or blanched almonds
2 tbsp. sultanas or other dried fruit, chopped
2 tbsp. chopped dried apricots
4 tbsp. brown sugar
2 tbsp. Margarine
2 tbsp. rice flour or poppy seeds
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 400F or 200C - Recipe makes about 15 cakes.
Sift the flout, sugar and salt together.
2. Chop the margarine into pieces and rub into the flour until crumbs form.
3. Add enough hot water (about half a cup) to make a pastry dough. Cover with a cloth.
4. Roast the peanuts in a hot pan for two minutes. Add the sesame seeds, then put a lid on to stop them from jumping out of the pan. Roast for a further two minutes. Put the peanuts and seeds in a food processor or blender and grind with the other nuts.
5. Add to the rest of the filling ingredients and mix together.
6. Roll out the pastry on a floured board. Cut rounds with a pastry cutter to fill the mold - if you have one - or make little pie cases. Rub the mold with margarine and spread pastry over the bottom and sides of the mold.
7. Put in a tablespoon of filling. Press down gently. Wet the edges of the pastry and cover with another round to make a lid. Seal together, and remove from the mold if you are using one.
8. Put all the cakes on a greased baking sheet.
Beat the eggs and sesame oil together and brush each cake with this mixture.
Bake about thirty minutes until the cakes are golden brown.

A handful of hazelnuts

You can even add a few features, or Moon symbols, to the surface.

Makes about 18 biscuits
The most famous of all the moon treats Moon Pie is even a trademarked cookie. An American favorite for over 75 years.
Ingredients:
For the Cookies:
8 ounces (1 cup) unsalted butter, at room temperature
3/4 cup light brown sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
21/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
For the Marshmallow Filling:
2 egg whites
Pinch cream of tartar
Pinch salt
2/3 cup light corn syrup
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 cup powdered sugar, sifted
For the Chocolate Coating:
12 ounces semisweet chocolate
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1. To Make the Cookies: With a mixer on medium speed, beat the butter until creamy, about 3 minutes. Add the brown sugar and beat at medium-high speed until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes. Reduce the speed to medium, add the egg and the vanilla extract, and beat to combine. Reduce the speed to low, add the flour and the salt, and mix just until a soft dough forms. Divide the dough in two, shape into disks, wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
2. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Line at least two baking sheets with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat; set aside. Working with one disk at a time, roll out the dough to about 1/8-inch thickness. Using a 2½ inch diameter round cutter, cut out the rounds and place them on the prepared baking sheets, about 1/2 an inch apart. Refrigerate the cookies (on the baking sheets) for 10 minutes.
3. Bake the cookies for 10 to 12 minutes, or until lightly browned. Cool on the pans for a couple of minutes, and then move to a cooling rack to cool completely.
4. To Make the Marshmallow Filling: Using a mixer with the whisk attachment, beat the the egg whites with the cream of tartar and the salt until firm peaks form, gradually increasing from medium-low speed to medium-high speed as the egg whites gain volume. Meanwhile, in a small saucepan, boil the corn syrup over high heat without stirring until it registers 230 to 235 degrees F on a candy thermometer (thread ball stage). Slowly drizzle the hot corn syrup into the egg whites and beat at high speed until glossy, about 2 minutes. Reduce the speed to medium-low, beat in the vanilla extract and the powdered sugar.
5. Using either a pastry bag or a spoon, mound about 1½ tablespoons of marshmallow filling into the center of a cookie. Top with another cookie and press lightly to spread the marshmallow to the edges. Add another mound on top of the second cookie, and top with another cookie, again pressing slightly to spread the filling to the edges. Repeat with the rest of the cookies.
6. To Make the Chocolate Coating: Using a double boiler or in the microwave on 50% power and in 30 second increments, melt the chocolate and vegetable oil together until completely smooth. Place the assembled cookies on a wire rack set over a sheet of wax paper. Spoon the melted chocolate over each cookie so that it runs down the sides and covers most of the cookie. Allow to set at room temperature for about 2 hours (or refrigerate to speed up the process). Store in an airtight container at room temperature.
Makes about 18 double decker cookies

Full Moon names date back to Native Americans, of what is now the northern and eastern United States. The tribes kept track of the seasons by giving distinctive names to each recurring full Moon. Their names were applied to the entire month in which each occurred. There was some variation in the Moon names, but in general, the same ones were current throughout the Algonquin tribes from New England to Lake Superior. European settlers followed that custom and created some of their own names. Since the lunar month is only 29 days long on the average, the full Moon dates shift from year to year.
The Hindu, Thai, Hebrew, Islamic, Tibetan, Mayan, Neo-pagan, Germanic, Celtic, and the traditional Chinese calendars are all based on the phases of the Moon. None of these calendars, however, begins its months with the full moon. In the Chinese, Jewish, Thai and some Hindu calendars, the full moon always occurs in the middle
of a month
Full Moons are traditionally associated with temporal (temporary) insanity (hence the terms lunacy and lunatic) insomnia, and various "phenomena". Psychologists, are divided when it comes to the effects of the moon on human behavior. They find that studies are generally not consistent, with some showing a positive effect and
others showing a negative effect.
Full Wolf Moon - January - Amid the cold and deep snows of midwinter, the wolf packs howl hungrily outside Indian villages. Therefore, the name for January's full Moon. Sometimes it was also referred to as the Quite Moon by the Celts, Old Moon, or the Moon After Yule. Discover Winter traditions and rituals.
Full Snow Moon - February - Since the heaviest snow usually falls during this month, native tribes of the north and east most often called February's Storm Moon or Full Snow Moon. Some tribes also referred to this Moon as the Full Hunger Moon, since harsh weather conditions in their areas made hunting very difficult. Known to the Celts as the Moon of Ice and the Chinese as the Budding Moon, this comes. February 1 is the Imbolc, or fire festival celebrating the mid point between the winter solstice and the spring equinox. A day also dedicated to the Celtic goddess, Brigid. Imbolic means "in the belly" and is a time honoring creativity, fertility and receptive, feminine energy. Candles are often tools used to celebrate this Celtic holiday. It is also a time we celebrate love!
Full Worm Moon - March - As the temperature begins to warm and the ground begins to thaw, earthworm casts appear, heralding the return of the robins. The more northern tribes knew this Moon as the Full Crow Moon, when the cawing of crows signaled the end of winter; or the Full Crust Moon, because the snow cover becomes crusted from thawing by day and freezing at night. The Full Sap Moon, marking the time of tapping maple trees, is another variation. To the settlers, it was also known as the Lenten Moon, and was considered to be the last full Moon of winter. March 20 is Ostara, the spring equinox, a sun festival dedicated to the Norse goddess, Eostre. Discover Spring traditions and rituals.
Full Pink Moon - April - This name came from the herb, moss pink or wild ground phlox, which is one of the earliest widespread flowers of the spring. Other names for this month's celestial body include the Full Sprouting Grass Moon, the Egg Moon, and among coastal tribes the Full Fish Moon, because this was the time that the shad swam upstream to spawn. Discover more Spring traditions and rituals.
Full Flower Moon - May - In most areas, flowers are abundant everywhere during this time. Thus, the name of this Moon. Other names include the Full Corn Planting Moon, or the Milk Moon. May 2 is Beltane, a fire festival celebrating the fertility of spring. Discover flower traditions and rituals.
Full Strawberry Moon - June - This name was universal to every Algonquin tribe.
However, in Europe they called it the Rose Moon. Also because the relatively short season for harvesting strawberries comes each year during the month of June . So the full Moon that occurs during that month was christened for the strawberry! June 21 is Litha, the summer solstice, a sun festival. Discover Summer solstice traditions and rituals.
Full Buck Moon - July - is normally the month when the new antlers of buck deer push out of their foreheads in coatings of velvety fur. It was also often called the Full Thunder Moon, for the reason that thunderstorms are most frequent during this time. Another name for this month's Moon was the Full Hay Moon or the Meadow Moon because the meadows are at their greatest point of growth in this month, and it is a time for hay cutting. Other names for this month's Moon include: Blood Moon, Grain Moon, Green Corn Moon, Herb Moon, Hungry Ghost Moon, Wort Moon. Discover Summer traditions and rituals.
Full Sturgeon Moon - August - The fishing tribes are given credit for the naming
of this Moon, since sturgeon, a large fish of the Great Lakes and other major bodies of water, were most readily caught during this month. A few tribes knew it as the Full Red Moon because, as the Moon rises, it appears reddish through any sultry haze. It was also called the Green Corn Moon or Grain Moon. August 1 is Lughnasadh, a fire festival and celebration of the early harvest, dedicated to the god, Lugh. Discover Summer traditions and rituals.
Full Corn Moon - September - This full moon's name is attributed to Native Americans because it marked when corn was supposed to be harvested. Most often, the September full moon is actually the Harvest Moon, which is the full Moon that occurs closest to the autumn equinox. In two years out of three, the Harvest Moon comes in September, but in some years it occurs in October. At the peak of harvest, farmers can work late into the night by the light of this Moon. September 23 is Mabon, the fall equinox, a sun festival celebrating the second harvest. Discover Fall equinox traditions and rituals.
Full Harvest Moon - October - This full Moon is often referred to as the Full Harvest or Hunter's Moon, Blood Moon, or Sanguine Moon. Many moons ago, Native Americans named this bright moon for obvious reasons. The leaves are falling from trees, the deer are fattened and it's time to begin storing up meat for the long winter ahead. Because the fields were traditionally reaped in late September or early October, hunters could easily see fox and other animals that come out to glean from the fallen grains. Probably because of the threat of winter looming close, the Hunter's Moon is generally accorded with special honor, historically serving as an important feast day in both Western Europe and among many Native American tribes. October 31 is Samhein, a fire festival celebrating the ancestors and observed as the new year in pagan celebrations. Discover All Hallow's Eve traditions and rituals.
Full Beaver Moon - November - This was the time to set beaver traps before the
swamps froze, to ensure a supply of warm winter furs. Another interpretation suggests that the name Full Beaver Moon comes from the fact that the beavers are now actively preparing for winter. It is sometimes also referred to as the Frosty Moon. Discover Fall traditions and rituals.
Full Cold Moon - December - During this month the winter cold fastens its grip, and nights are at their longest and darkest. It is also sometimes called the Moon before Yule. The term Long Night Moon is a doubly appropriate name because the midwinter night is indeed long, and because the Moon is above the horizon for a long time. The midwinter full Moon has a high trajectory across the sky because it is opposite the low Sun. December 22 is Yule, the winter solstice, a sun festival, celebrating the return of the sun. Discover Yule traditions and rituals.
Full Blue Moon The term "Blue Moon" seems to have been attached to a familiar and common event in only the last 30 years. It does not even involve the color blue. When we can view a full moon two times in one calendar month, this is referred to as a "blue moon." Some individuals claim that the second calendar Full Moon was based on the phrase "once in a blue moon." Yet, in truth, that seems strange since the "two full moons" in a calendar month happens about once every 2.5 years.
Metaphysically, the Blue Moon represents our rare opportunity to fully express ourselves through communication and clarity of expression. The symbolic blue energy represents our Throat Chakra. Use this rare occasion to open up, relay your inner thoughts and creativiy. What are you yearning to express? What's the motivation behind your communication? What kind of signals are you sending? Utilize this blue-moon-moment in time to contemplate your spoken and unspoken articulations. Bring about change and move forward.
Ocean tides are periodic rises and falls in the level of the sea, and are formed by the gravitational attraction of the Moon and Sun on the water in the ocean. Although the Moon is much smaller than the Sun, it has a greater gravitational attraction for the Earth because the Moon is much closer to Earth. This causes the oceans to bulge out in the direction of the Moon. Learn more about the rhythm of the tides.

Lunar Generator Crystal
Our Newest Creation! The Lunar Generator Crystal necklace is the follow up to our Harmonic Generator. This one of a kind, beta quartz crystal was designed exclusively for Peacefulmind.com by renowned physicist, Dr.Guo-Yuan Yang. Essentially, this crystal has been "programmed" to bring attunement with our lunar consciousness. The power of the Lunar Phases deeply affects many aspects of life on the planet including ocean tides, fertility and human behavior. With conscious awareness, manifesting with the moon can lead to an ever expanding spiral of spiritual, emotional and material growth. Dr Yang uses Nonlinear optics (NLO), the branch of optics that describes the behavior of light in nonlinear media, which the dielectric polarization P responds nonlinearly to the electric field E of the light.
Two lasers are used in this process. A pulse laser and a driving laser. High harmonics are generated from a pulse laser with pulse durations shorter than that of the driving laser. This is due to phase matching and ionization. High harmonics are emitted co-linearly with the driving laser into a crescent-shaped quartz crystal. Why a crescent-shaped crystal? In the Tattva system the Aap or crescent, represents the gustiferous ether. It is associated with the element of Water, in Western Tradition. It is represented in the Tibetan version as a lavender/teal, half circle. The Golden Dawn depicted Apas as a white or silver crescent.
This type of crystal controlled oscillator produces an output rich in harmonics (overtones or multiples) of its fundamental frequency. The lowest-frequency (and highest-intensity) mode of the Schumann resonance is at a frequency of approximately 7.8 Hz. This particular frequency just so happens to be associated with the Alpha waves in our brain, which are most associated with our meditative state. When your alpha is within normal ranges we tend to also experience good moods, see the world truthfully, and have a sense of calmness. These correlate to our highest Chakra consciousness levels of lavender/teal, hence the colors of the crystal. This process creates entrainment with ourselves and the crystal. Entrainment is the tendency of two oscillating bodies to lock into phase, so that they vibrate in harmony. The principle of entrainment is universal. Appearing in chemistry, pharmacology, biology, medicine, psychology, sociology, astronomy, architecture and more. The classic example shows individual pulsing heart muscle cells. When they are brought close together, they begin pulsing in synchronicity.
My Lunar Generator crystal measures 35 mm and is fastened onto a beautiful silver plated 16" chain and comes in a lovely silk bag.

Moon & Star Necklace
The juxtapose of the crescent moon facing the star, holds relevance in the relationship between one and another. The widespread use of a star and crescent on coins (which are one of the best sources of evidence for iconography in the ancient world) is perhaps unsurprising given the often clear visibility of the moon and stars in the night sky; the astrological significance assigned to conjunctions; the association of celestial bodies with the gods of various pantheons; and the association of justification for rule with divine mandate.
The moon gives light at night and the stars decorate the skies The moon is the symbol of time for determining the beginning and ending of any cyclic event such as the seasons, time on the lunar calendar or a month and stars are the symbol or tool for determining direction. Astrological Grid Sets
This is a necessity for anyone seeking astrological, reiki or energetic encouragement! Many Energy Workers add the subtle vibrations of stone energy as a complement to their healing sessions or daily lives. Usually this includes the laying on of the appropriate colored stones to coordinate with the Chakra centers, Aura layers, meditating with a particular stone, or wearing the stones as jewelry when the inspiration hits. There are, however, even more uses when stones are set up in a 'Grid' and are properly 'activated'.
A 'Grid' is more simply put, a way to arrange the stones in a sacred geometric pattern. They are then consciously 'activated' by connecting a 'line of Light' between the stones so that they radiate an energy field in the immediate environment in which they are constructed or are essential for distant healing. Our sets have been graciously Reiki-charged and blessed by Dr.Luna Wells.
Made by nature, each beautiful set includes 6 select tumblestones, 1 center Master stone, 1 crystal wand, 1 4' x 4" Copper Reiki Grid plate and Complete Instructions. We have designed each Astrological Grid for specific conditions associated with each month of the year. There are many stones that represent each sun sign.
These stones have been carefully chosen to represent the months and their coordinating sun signs and have been chosen based on intuitive feedback, their physical and metaphysical properties.

Astrological Incense
Developed from ancient recipes, these aromatic incense stimulate the olfactory nerve, encouraging the power of scent to work on an emotional level associating smell with behavioral modification.
These incredible incense start with a base of resin granules. We then add a mixture of herbs and essential oils for each specific sign. Resin granules are burned using incense charcoal. Light your charcoal and drop a few granules of resin on the charcoal. It will begin to smoulder, releasing the intense fragrance of these fine resin granules. Resin incense is a pure form of incense since it is not diluted by a burning base or fixatives typical in man-made stick or cone incense.

The Runes Set
Runes are an alphabetic script used by the Nordic and Germanic tribes of Northern Europe from the first century until well into the Middle Ages. A rune is not merely a letter in an old Germanic alphabet, but it bears the primary definition of "secret" or "mysteries." There were many different runic alphabets in use throughout Northern Europe over the centuries. The most common is the Germanic or Elder Futhark. In addition to their use as a written alphabet, the runes also served as a system of symbols used for magic and divination. This system may have begun as early as 200 B.C.E.
This authentic Amethyst Rune Stone Set is perfect for finding answers to the questions we all have. Rune stones are used in psychic readings. Each set consists of 24 genuine Amethyst stones, each inscribed with a character from the Elder Futhark rune alphabet. Much like Tarot cards, rune stones are set in varying patterns and interpreted by readers to answer questions for the future and the past. Amethyst is considered the stone of spirituality and is associated with the crown chakra. This rune set is natural amethyst, therefore each stone is unique and special. The real benefit of amethyst, outside of its beauty, is the energy it lends to itself to spirituality. It is used to foster psychic ability and spiritual awareness. It is often used in past life work and predictions of the future.
This set includes the 24 symbols or glyphs, which were considered the eternal representations of the fundamental forces of the universe, complete instruction booklet for divination and a beautiful bag. RUNES are associated with wisdom and self knowledge. They can be used to put you in touch with your inner self as well as solving practical, everyday problems.

Crystal Tarot Kit
The Tarot was used from the mid-15th century in various parts of Europe to play a group of card games such as Italian tarocchini and French tarot.
From the late 18th century until the present time the tarot has also found use by mystics and occultists in efforts at divination or as a map of mental and spiritual pathways.
As with the tarot, crystals are multi-faceted. For each tarot symbol and crystal there are several facets and meanings to each. As we submerge ourselves deeper into the various meanings
we come into a unified field of understanding, the total impression of the grand picture.
This fantastic crystal tarot kit is a combined effort of Andrew's metaphysical understanding of gemstones and Dr. Luna Well's incredible knowledge of the tarot!
This kit includes: 22 semi precious stones, representing The Major Arcana, an instruction booklet with indepth directions on how to work with and interpret your crystal tarot,
a beautiful bag for storing your kit and sacred incense to set the mood!

Glossary of Terms
Cardinality: are the three cardinalities expressed as either cardinal, fixed or mutable aspects for each sign of the zodiac. This refers to the changeability, flexibility or rigidity of a sign.
It is the combination of cardinality and elements that give us the twelve combinations evidenced in the astrological signs.
Cusps: of the sun signs mark where each sign begins. If you were born within the last five days or first five days of a sign, you were born on a cusp. Since the Sun does not move into each sign at exactly the same time every year, if you were born on a cusp, you will find that you have qualities of the two signs that you straddle. The sign that you were actually born under, however, will always have the stronger influence.
Decanate: is a subdivision of a sun sign. Every sun sign in divided into three parts: First Decanate, Second Decanate, and Third Decanate. The 360-day calendar year is broken into 10 day segments. The zodiac is a 360 degrees circle, each sign consists of 30 degrees of the zodiac. Each decanate, therefore 10 degrees of the zodiac circle. Each decanate, then, is 10 days long. (Keep in mind, the 10 days are an approximation, as we do not have 360-day calendars).
If you were born within the first 10 days of your sun sign, you were born in the First Decanate. If you were born in the 11th-20th day, you were born in the Second Decanate. You were born in the Third Decanate if you were born in the 21st - 30th day of your sun sign. Each decanate has its own qualities. Just as each sun sign has a planetary ruler, each decanate has one as well. These are called planetary subrulers because they do not override the entire sun sign’s planetary ruler. Your decanate individualizes the characteristics of your particular time of birth.
Elements: are the four astrological elements of air, earth, fire and water. In astrology, the attributes of one of these elements are associated with each sign. Given that there are twelve signs in the zodiac and four elements, each astrological element is associated with three zodiac signs and these signs share some common characteristics because of their common element.
Moon Sign: is the sign of the zodiac that the moon occupied when you were born, where you were born.
Rising Sign: is the zodiac constellation that was on the horizon (ascendant) where you were born (latitude and longitude), on the exact date, and precise time you were born.
Knowing your rising sign will provide greater insight. Any personal astrology forecast based upon your natal chart will illuminate your rising sign for you.
Sun Sign:
sun sign indicates which constellation of the zodiac the sun occupied when you were born. Though it is the most popular and familiar of your astrological signs, in fact it is only part of your astrological makeup.
