testosterone boosters, weakest part of a man
Our lives are filled with transitions. From birth to death, men tend to go
through a major transition cycle every eight years, with women it is every seven
years. So looking at our lives in cycles helps us to map out in our mind or better
understand our transitions and how to approach them.
Productivity is at the center of a man's existence. A man's productivity is
what gets him noticed and appreciated. This helps him climb the ladder of success, bringing home the "bacon" and be recognized as the
bread winner. As he ages, the productivity tends to
switch to self-satisfying tasks and those, which give him purpose.
For men, healthy lifestyle choices, such as eating a nutritional, satisfying,
healthy diet and making physical activity part of your daily routine is optimal. Also
important for men is the management of risky behavior, which included excess drinking
and engaging in unprotected sex.
As we age, men's health issues are likely to change. The most vital sense of a man's
health is his virility. All of which starts with good arterial blood flow! From a
healthy heart to a good sex life, the proper flow and circulation of blood in our
arteries is one of the most important things we can do to maintain good health and
push back the aging process.
There is a common denominator between good arterial
health and disorders such as heart attack, obesity, diabetes and high glucose levels,
as well as sexual health.
That common denominator is blood.
Blood plays a role in every aspect of our lives. Scientists
agree that one of the most significant factors contributing to aging is chronic
inflammation. [1]. As we age, we tend towards a number of identifiable inflammatory
diseases. Chronic inflammation damages the cells of our brains, heart, arterial
walls, and other body structures. As we age, the physical deterioration such as
diminished endurance, gray hair, loose teeth, weight gain, loss of muscle mass,
decline in agility and increased susceptibility to health problems are already taking
hold.
Androgens are the male hormones most associated with the development,
function and increase masculine characteristics.
Androgens are present in both males and female. Androgens are the original anabolic
steroids and the precursor of all estrogens, the female sex hormones.
Androgens are the dominant hormone in men, giving them their male characteristics.
Androgen control the growth of the gonads of a developing fetus, as well as play a
major role in development during puberty. Androgens support sperm production and
maturity of the sex organs.
Androgens inhibit muscle growth and tissue development, as well as the distribution
of fat.
Androgens are divided into several types of hormones and control one or more aspects
of masculine development or function.
* Testosterone is is the
principal male sex hormone and an anabolic steroid. It plays a major role in the
development of male reproductive tissues
including the testis, prostate promoting secondary sexual characteristics such as the
increase in muscle, bone mass and hair growth.[3] In addition, testosterone is
essential for health and well-being[4] as well as the prevention of osteoporosis.[5]
* Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is a steroid
hormone produced in the adrenal cortex from cholesterol. It is the primary precursor
of natural estrogens.
* Androstenedione (Andro) is an androgenic steroid that is produced by the
testes, adrenal cortex, and ovaries. While androstenediones are converted
metabolically to testosterone and other androgens, they are also the parent structure
of estrone.
* Androsterone is a chemical created during the breakdown of androgens.
This by-product, derived from progesterone, can exert a minor masculinising effects,
but with only a small percentage of intensity that testosterone does.
* Androstenediol is the steroid metabolite that is thought to act as the
main regulator of gonadotropin secretion.
* Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is a breakdown of testosterone and a more
potent androgen than testosterone binding strongly to androgen receptors.
During the aging process, male hormones decrease in
production. This process is sometimes referred to as andropause or male menopause. Although there is
not clear evidence as to why this happens,
some researchers believe it is due to an increase in body fat which contains an
enzyme called aromatase. This enzyme has been indirectly linked with a
decrease in male hormones in the body.
Too little testosterone may cause a decrease in sexual
interest, as well as erectile
dysfunction.
The Eastern approach to treating men's health as a holistic therapy is
connecting the relationship between the mental, emotional, physical and spiritual
outlook. The Eastern medicine paradigm treats the whole person, as the belief is that
nothing works independent of each other, but in conjunction with one another. This
paradigm also sees symptoms as a differential factor. The Eastern approach
also looks at lifestyle concerns, environmental issues and diet, nutritional choices
and exercise as a complete effort in maintaining optimum health.
With this said, a holistic approach must have a course of action. A
holistic therapy needs to address all of the above aspects (mental, emotional,
physical and spiritual) in order to be whole. I have many
men come into my practice to tell me how they have begun dabbling in alternative
medicine for their situations. I do think it is wonderful that more and more men are
becoming empowered and willing to take responsibility for their health and health
care. What I would love to see more of is addressing all aspects of their whole
selves.
For example, I had a new patient come to me with erectile issues that were
worse during the week, with fatigue, loose stool and frequent urination. His stress
levels were extremely high due to his work during the week and he was constantly
complaining about gas and bloating. His solution was to take Ginseng to boost his
energy and yohimbe, because he read somewhere this could help. He was taking an over
the counter remedy for his loose stool and a prescription from his doctor for the
frequent urination. He did nothing to address his stress levels and was eating
whatever he wanted because he was so stressed and called himself an "emotional
eater." This was his holistic approach.
Unfortunately, not only was he taking an inappropriate combination of
medications and herbal supplements, he was not taking the correct doses. He was not
addressing the root of his problem and was sabotaging himself with what he was
putting in his mouth. He was simply addressing "symptoms", which is no better than a
Western approach. Of course, symptoms must be address, but the root of the problem
will continue to remain and rebound back into his life the minute his remedies for
the symptoms wear off. By reaching down to the root of the problem and "rebuilding
and fortifying" the foundation, he can affectively resolve so much more of his
imbalances.
A holistic course of action takes into account the mental, emotional, physical and spiritual
balance achieved throughout life. It is the accumulation of the whole based on
our constitutional health (what we are born with/into) and the lifestyles choices we make during our stay here. Following a holistic lifestyle should be one of continuous education, exploration and self-discovery.
So many, many people give their lives and bodies away to the trust of advertisers,
doctors, friends and family members.
Learn to listen to your body and your intuition. Trust only your body, as it will do its best to
take care of itself. And when it does not, a health professional is a good place to
get an idea as to what is happening. But... no matter who you see for your health, I
encourage you to get a second and even third opinion. All health care professionals
will give you their opinion, based on their expertise, signs, symptoms, physical
findings or tests. Again, I stress the word opinion, as this is exactly what
it is. An opinion is based on a culmination of information originating from
everything including hearsay to practical means. Some practitioner's scope is broad
and far reaching.
While other practitioner's scope of practice is not so amassed or open. Regardless,
listen and learn. The more responsibility you take for your health the greater
your knowledge grows. This goes for what you read in books and on the Internet as
well. Everyone with an opinion has a belief or set of beliefs that formulate that
opinion. Sometimes, the formulation of these beliefs into an opinion may not always
be the most altruistic. Discern information you receive carefully. Crosscheck
this information and do more research before giving yourself and your body over
freely. Formulate your opinion or belief system based on your
own research as well. Be a well-informed patient, first.
A holistic course of action for men needs to address the change in the body's physical characteristics. The mental and emotional side of men's aging is often an even
larger hurdle to overcome, as our attitudes and beliefs create our mind/body
structure. Elements that are seldom looked at in relation to men's health include
sleep patterns, bowel movements, urination, digestion and the assimilation of food in
the body, body temperature in general, body temperature in specific areas, movement
and exercise, food choices, situations that bring us stress and joy and mental
attitudes that contribute to our spiritual growth.
Lifestyle factors include situations that occur during our lifetime based
on our choices, such as smoking, chemical dependency, obesity,
type 2 diabetes and dietary
choices. Of course it is never just one factor that is an indicator of
this change, but a host of factors accumulating over a lifetime. Many times, the
symptoms from the aging process are confused with
symptoms of a loss in virility.
In general, symptoms associated with the aging process
include weight gain; change in sleep patterns,
hearing loss, a rise in blood pressure and/or cholesterol. These changes are often a direct
result of aging. Often, by changing some lifestyle
choices these symptoms of aging lessen or disappear all together. Regardless, if
symptoms are due to lifestyle or the aging problems, the
solutions can affect both outcomes.
1. Not smoking has a direct correlation to arterial
blood flow and circulation, so by quitting smoking you can improve your fitness level, energy and sex life.
2. Weight gain increases body fat, which in turn
affects hormone levels. Caloric restriction is imperative as we age. By
reducing the number of calories per day to 1200, a decrease in weight will occur.
Belly fat has been shown to alter hormone levels.
3. Exercise, like work, eating, sleeping, must be
scheduled into your day in order for you to do it! You know when to go to work, you
know when to eat, and you must know when to exercise. The best way to do this is to
make it apart of your day. Increasing your exercise to 4 days will have additional
benefits such as lowering cholesterol and burning more calories. In addition, weight
bearing exercises (walking, weight training, jogging) help increase bone density.
Exercise regulates circulation.
4. Decreasing cellular inflammation,
due to free radicals is essential. Free radicals promote beneficial oxidation that
produces energy and kills bacterial invaders. However, in excess, they produce
harmful oxidation or oxidative stress that can damage cell membranes and cell
contents. [2].
These free radicals cause inflammation.
5. Improve social relationships. Whether
your social connections are with a spouse, offspring, siblings, bridge partners,
and/or fellow churchgoers, they're crucial to good health while growing older.
Other studies have confirmed the health-promoting power of social connections.
Behavioral scientist Joan Tucker, PhD, says that having people in your life can make
you feel loved and cared for, which can enhance your mental well-being.
6. Low sex drive can often be an issue as hormone levels fluctuate. Learn
to boost
testosterone. Staying sexually active will increase blood
flow to surrounding tissue.
7. Keep your prostate healthy. The chance of having prostate problems tends to increase equally as a man ages.
For instance, a man who is 50 years old has a 50% chance of having prostate issues.
60 years old, 60% chance and so on. Besides age, family history is the only other
risk indicator.
8. Stress plays a major role in all biological and
physiological functions. Getting long term stress issues under control has shown to
be extremely important. Regulating the body's cooling mechanism through regular
exercise is imperative.
Exercise, meditation, yoga, relaxation
techniques, massage, acupuncture, guided imagery are just a few therapies that can all help to relieve depression, anxiety, irritability, mental forgetfulness, fuzziness, over thinking
and fatigue. Stress puts a
great deal of burden on the adrenal glands, which, in turn, causes them to work
harder. This decreases the amount of hormones needed to help reduce the effects of
declining hormone levels in the body.
Do this progressive relaxation technique. Use
your hands. Both self-massage and acupressure can help.
9. Controlling pain. Pain issues can derail your life.
Headaches, back pain and injury are some of the most common pain syndromes that can
be avoided or remedied rather easily when they occur. Probably one of my best
remedies for tension and pain is trigger
point therapy. This can be done with a tennis ball while laying on a hard floor.
Follow my treatment for trigger point
therapy here.
Learn biofeedback. Studies have proven it effective for both tension
headaches, back pain, trauma injuries and migraines. Biofeedback is the innate
ability to influence the automatic nervous system through the exertion of will and
mind. Chances are you have used biofeedback yourself. You've used it if you have ever
taken your temperature or stepped on a scale. These devices "feed back" information
about your body's condition.
10. Eat something. Food as medicine has been used for
centuries to treat a wide variety of disorders. Used for prevention as well as
treating symptoms, the healing power of food and herbs has been documented for
centuries. Eating food rich in plant based phytosterols can be helpful for men. A
plant-based diet rich in multicolored fruits and vegetables has been shown to
decrease symptoms of weight gain and decreased aging signs.
Food as medicine has been used for centuries to treat a
wide variety of disorders. Used for prevention as well as treating symptoms, the
healing power of food and herbs has been documented for centuries. Eating a healthy
diet, maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly and quitting smoking if you
smoke, can help protect against heart disease, osteoporosis and some types of cancer.
Water should be a very important part of any nutritional program. Distilled
water is best. 6-8 8 ounces per day. Water allows for the cleansing, thinning and
free flow of mucus in the system. Dehydration is often a trigger of symptoms.
The Best Foods For A Man
1. Lean Meat: Red meat is an important component in a mans' diet and can be
good for you. Lean cuts of beef (and even pork) are loaded with protein and is also
one of the best sources of leucine, an amino acid that helps men build muscle. The Full Spectrum Diet rule of thumb: lean beef, 1 oz
(round, sirloin, flank, tenderloin, chuck, rump), and lean pork, 1 oz (boiled
ham, turkey bacon, tenderloin, chops) once or twice a week.
2. Fish and Shellfish: as well as, other types of seafood and fish are rich
in zinc and omega 3 fatty acids. Zinc is a critical mineral for heart, muscles, and
the male reproductive system. Zinc deficiency has shown to increase poor sperm
quality as well as, male infertility. Studies suggest two servings of fish per week
(salmon or halibut) can lower your chances of dying from heart disease.
The Full Spectrum Diet rule of thumb: 2 sardines, 2 oz
shellfish (clams, crab, lobster, scallops, shrimp), 1/4 cup of tuna (canned in
water), 1 oz fish (fresh or frozen, not breaded).
3. Soy Products: The strongest protection against prostate cancer is soy.
This includes tofu, miso soup, and soy milk. According to a study of more than 40
nations, soy offers an excellent source of dietary fiber and protein. It is rich in
vitamin B6 and important in building amino acids and forming neurotransmitters. Soy
is a rich source of isoflavones, the plant hormone that researchers believe could
account for Asia's low rate of heart disease. In recent clinical trials, men and
women with high LDL (bad cholesterol) levels were able to reduce them by consuming
soy over an extended period. The Full Spectrum Diet rule
of thumb: Tofu can be enjoyed as a meat substitute, one to two times per week. Do not
consume soy if you have an estrogen dominant disorder.
4. Eggs: are a super source of lutein, protein, and iron, and that is from
eating the whole egg. If you have high cholesterol, enjoy the egg whites. The Full Spectrum Diet rule of thumb: one whole Egg per
serving or 3 egg whites.
5. High Fiber Cereal: Fiber ensures that the digestive system is working
properly to expel waste and maintain good health over the course of our lifetimes! It
is another well-known fact that breakfast is the most important meal of the day.
Fiber should therefore be incorporated into your daily breakfast to ensure that your
system gets the best possible kick-start every single day. High fiber cereals are
readily available and just a bowlful can often give you more fiber than the rest of
your daily meals put together.
6. Brown Rice: an excellent source of manganese, and a good source of the
minerals selenium and magnesium. The complete milling and polishing that converts
brown rice into white rice destroys 67% of the vitamin B3, 80% of the vitamin B1, 90%
of the vitamin B6, half of the manganese, half of the phosphorus, 60% of the iron,
and all of the dietary fiber and essential fatty acids.
7. Berries: The colorful pigments that give berries their beautiful blue
and red hues are also good for your health. Berries contain phytochemicals and
flavonoids that may help to prevent some forms of cancer. Cranberries and blueberries
contain a substance that may prevent bladder infections. A diet rich in blackberries,
blueberries, raspberries, cranberries and strawberries may help to reduce your risk
of several types of cancers. Blueberries and raspberries also contain lutein, which
is important for healthy vision. Strawberries contains over 100 mg of vitamin C,
almost as much as a cup of orange juice, as well as trace amounts of calcium,
magnesium, folate and potassium.
8. Avocado: is rich in monounsaturated fat, a "good" fat, which benefits
the body. Avocados can benefit cholesterol when it replaces saturated or trans fats
in your diet. It can lower your "bad" cholesterol (LDL) as well as, your overall
total cholesterol level. The Full Spectrum Diet rule of
thumb: no more than 25%-35% of your daily calories come from all types of fat. Olive
oil and nuts also contain good fats. Enjoy 1/8 of an avacado per serving.
9. Tomatoes: rich in lycopene, tomatoes are a preventative food and are
beneficial. Cooked tomatoes and tomato sauce are known to have the phytonutrient,
lycopene, which has shown to fight off prostate cancer by 35 to 45 percent in those
who eat it ten times or more a week. Proper absorption is key and that includes
lycopene with some good fat, which tomato sauce has. The Full
Spectrum Diet rule of thumb: Ten tablespoons of spaghetti sauce will do the trick
as opposed to 164 raw tomatoes per week. A note on tomatoes: once a man has a
problem with the prostate eliminate tomato and tomato products as they are too acid
for an environment where inflammation is present.
10. Vegetables In Every Color: because they are packed with phytochemicals,
plant-based nutrients that boost immunity, cell health and protect against cancer.
Eat different colored vegetables helps you get the many different types of
phytochemicals you need.
The Full Spectrum Diet rule of thumb: Enjoy 7-9 servings
of different colored vegetables per day. 1/2 cup cooked or 1 cup raw is one serving
size.
11. Whey Protein: Out of the many protein sources out there, whey protein
is the ultimate. It comes from milk. During the process of turning milk into cheese,
whey protein is separated out. It is found in powdered form, in milk and yogurt and
is another source of leucine. Leucine is a great muscle-building amino acid. The Full Spectrum Diet rule of thumb: Choose yogurt that is
plain and/or low fat or fat free. Greek yogurt is an even better choice. Yogurt is
loaded with protein, potassium and the good "friendly" bacteria that keeps the gut
healthy. Drink fat-free milk or ight yogurt, about 8 oz per serving.
12. Bananas: is rich in potassium. Potassium is a critical component in
muscle contractions and bone health, Bananas can also help regulate blood pressure.
The Full Spectrum Diet rule of thumb: 3 medium size
bananas are all you need to fulfill your daily dose of potassium. Bananas should not
be eaten if you have a phlegm condition as it can aggrevate this problem (sinus
congestion, common cold, or expectorating phlegm.)
13. Tart Cherries: Cherry juice is an amazing remedy for soothing sore
muscles. The pigment in cherries and cherry juice mimics the effects of certain
anti-inflammatory drugs, without the side effects. The Full
Spectrum Diet rule of thumb: Eat up to 12 cherries in one serving.
14. Ginger: like cherries, ginger has anti-inflammatory properties that
help the body recover when you push yourself too hard. Eating ginger on a regular
basis may help reduce exercise-related muscle injuries and pain from exercise or
overexertion. The Full Spectrum Diet rule of thumb: Ginger
can be enjoyed as a tea or supplemental tonic. Slice up a few slices and grate over
salads or stir fry with meat or chicken.
15. Dark Chocolate: is a heart smart food. It may improve blood flow and
circulation. The flavanols in dark chocolate, studies suggest, may decrease levels of
LDL or bad cholesterol, improve circulation, and regulate blood pressure. Men with
poor blood flow are more likely to develop many illnesses including, poor sex drive,
erectile dysfunction, andropause, depression and poor muscle tone and function. The Full Spectrum Diet rule of thumb: dark chocolate, up to 1
oz per day instead of other sweets or sugars. More than this amount will cause weight
gain. Mind your portions!
16. Nuts: are a great source of "good" quality fats and provide protein,
fiber and zinc. It also satisfies the urge for that crunchy, salty, savory midday
snack. Pistachios and walnuts stand out because they're higher in plant sterols that
can improve cholesterol levels and also tonify the kidneys. A 1 oz. serving of Brazil
nuts has seven times the recommended daily value of selenium. The Full Spectrum Diet rule of thumb: just one handful will
satisfy your daily requirement of a good fat snack. More than this amount will cause
the scales to tip in the wrong direction. Mind your portions!
17. Coffee: First, there's the potential effect coffee has on type 2
diabetes risk. Type 2 diabetes makes heart disease and stroke more likely. Coffee may
counter several risk factors for heart attack and stroke. Besides that, coffee has
been linked to lower risks for heart rhythm disturbances (another heart attack and
stroke risk factor) in men and women, and lower risk for strokes in women.
In a study of about 130,000 Kaiser Permanente health plan members, people who
reported drinking 1-3 cups of coffee per day were 20% less likely to be hospitalized
for abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias) than nondrinkers, regardless of other risk
factors.
A 2009 study from Finland and Sweden showed that, out of 1,400 people followed for
about 20 years, those who reported drinking 3-5 cups of coffee daily were 65% less
likely to develop dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, compared with nondrinkers or
occasional coffee drinkers.
This is one of my favorite perscriptions I give my male patients. These three supplements are only natural. One is plant based, the other is a natural steroid hormone produced by the adrenal glands and the third is an omega fatty acid. They must be taken together, twice a day for 30 days. The results will be so great that you will want to continue this protocol, but I would only recommend doing this only 6 months apart (twice a year).
1. DIM (diindolylmethane) is a plant compound called an indole and has been shown to help regulate and promote a more efficient metabolism of estrogen, and an optimal ratio of estrogen metabolites. DIM balances estrogen levels, promoting health and well-being. This powerful phytonutrient is found in broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and brussels sprouts, unlike other phytonutrients like soy isoflavones, has no hormonal properties in itself.
2. Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is a natural steroid hormone, one of the hormones produced by the adrenal glands. After being secreted by the adrenal glands, it circulates in the bloodstream as DHEA-sulfate (DHEAS) and is converted as needed into other hormones. DHEA is chemically similar to testosterone and estrogen and is easily converted into those hormones. DHEA production peaks in early adulthood and declines in production with age in both men and women. Therefore, many diseases which correlate with age also correlate with low levels of DHEA production.
Standard dosage is 100 mg twice a day.
3. Fish Oil: Take 2,000 mg of rich, omega 3 fish oil, in doses of 1,000 mg, twice a day.
To increase testosterone levels, consider taking DHEA 100 mg in divided dosage (50 mg, twice a day) with DIM-plus 60 capsule size (one capsule, twice a day for a total of 100 mg) for a total of two capsules per day along with a "good fat" such as flaxseed or fish oil 1,000 mg, twice a day (2,000 mg total per day).
Another favorite combination of supplements I recommend for long term use are my Male Performance formula. Take this all natural herbal combination, two pills, twice a day. Along with this, take 2,000 mg of L-Arginine (one of the best male amino acids) in divided doses (1,000 mg), twice a day. (Take up to 3 months at a time. Take a break for a month and then go back on the 3 month regime.)
Vitamin C research suggests it may prevent sperm from "clumping" together and that it increases sperm count. Superoxide dismutase and glutathione - research shows that these and other antioxidants may improve sperm quality. Dose: 1,000 mg twice a day.
Vitamin E supplementation with this antioxidant has been shown to increase sperm motility and to enhance the ability of the sperm to penetrate the egg in test-tube studies. Dose: 400 IU daily. Talk to your doctor prior to starting Vitamin E, particularly if you are currently taking aspirin or other blood thinners.
Selenium: Dose: 200 mcg daily. Improves sperm motility.
Coenzyme Q10: Take 10 mg daily. Increases sperm count and motility.
Zinc is an essential nutrient for proper sperm production. A deficiency may result in lowered testosterone levels.. The usual recommended dosage of zinc is about 15 to 30 mg daily, coupled with 1 mg of copper for balance. Too much zinc can be toxic. Do not exceed a dose of 15 to 30 mg daily This mineral is found in great amounts in the outer layer of sperm and plays an important role in the production of the hormone testosterone.
Vitamin B12: Take 1000 mcg daily. A B-12 deficiency reduces sperm motility and sperm count. Even if no deficiency exists, B-12 supplementation may help men with a sperm count of less than 20 million per milliliter or a motility rate of less than 50%
Zinc and B Vitamins (B6, B12, and folic acid) are critical nutrients in the male reproductive system for proper hormone metabolism, sperm formation and motility.
L-Arginine (Kidney Yang tonic) especially enhance sperm count. Studies indicate that this amino acid may improve sperm motility. Take 4 gr daily. Needed to produce sperm. If the sperm count is below 10 million per ml, arginine probably will not provide any benefit.
L-Carnitine (Yin and Blood tonic) especially enhance sperm count. Researchers have found that L-carnitine is found in much greater amounts in sperm tissues than other cells. Preliminary studies suggest that L-carnitine and acetyl-L-carnitine may be able to stimulate sperm motility in certain situations. The role of L-carnitine on sperm maturation and sperm quality however, is still unclear. Several clinical studies have evaluated the effect of L-carnitine on men with a low sperm count, a reduction/loss in sperm movement, or men with both conditions. These studies have evaluated only small numbers of men who took oral carnitine supplements for varying lengths of time. Some patients enrolled in these studies experienced increased sperm counts and/or increased sperm motility. Take 3-4 grams daily. Required for normal sperm function.
Flaxseed oil: Take 1 tbsp daily. Is a source of essential fatty acids.
Fish Oil: Take 2,000 mg of rich, omega 3 fish oil, in doses of 1,000 mg, twice a day.
Ginseng: increases production of testosterone and helps with sperm production. Avoid if you have high blood pressure or Yin deficiency (with heat signs).
There is a common denominator between good arterial health and disorders such as heart attack, obesity, diabetes and high glucose levels, as well as sexual health. That common denominator is blood.
Herbal medicine is a wonderful preventative solution. Complications can arise when taking herbal medicine and allopathic drugs your doctor has prescribed. Great caution should be used especially if you are on blood thinners, diuretics or any other heart related medication. Consult your doctor with any questions you may have, before taking additional herbs or supplements.
Blessed Thistle: Strengthens the heart.
Capsicum: Blood pressure and health of blood vessels, Capsicum stimulants circulation, enhances blood flow and is considered to be food for the circulatory system. Capsicum assists in lowering blood pressure and breaking down cholesterol buildup.
Cayenne Pepper is renowned, not only for healing the entire digestive system, and for arthritic pain relief, but also for the heart and circulatory system. It acts as a catalyst and increases the effectiveness of other herbs when used with them. Cayenne has been known to stop heart attacks within 30 seconds. Cayenne has a high source of Vitamins A & C, has the complete B complexes, and is very rich in organic calcium and potassium, which is one of the reasons it is good for the heart. Consider the synergy of taking both cayenne and Hawthorne berry together.
Cornsilk: Natural diuretic.
Folate (800 mg daily), a B complex and Zinc (15 mg daily) have shown
to increase fertility and improve sperm motility.
Garlic: A rich source of potassium, zinc, selenium, vitamin A and Vitamin C, is commonly used to fight infection, increase circulation and help prevent cardiovascular disease. Consider eating raw Garlic every day; since it is a very effective antifungal agent, or use it in tincture form. Research has shown that garlic is an anti-cholesterol remedy and is recommended for heart and circulatory problems. This is a wonderful natural antibiotic and detoxifier which protects the body against infection by enhancing immune function, as well.
Gotu Kola: Strengthens the heart and helps lower blood pressure.
Hawthorn Berry: a member of the rose family, was recognized by physicians in the early 1800s for its ability to treat disorders related to circulation and respiration (breathing). Considered a "cardiotonic" herb, the flowers and berries of the hawthorn plant have been used in traditional medicine to treat irregular heartbeat, high blood pressure, chest pain, atherosclerosis, and congestive heart failure. Hawthorn berries contain large amounts of bioflavonoids, which help dilate and strengthen the walls of blood vessels, relax arteries, and improve circulation of blood to heart muscles. studies suggest that Hawthorn berry extract improves heart function and exercise capacity in those with CHF. Participants in research trials also report significantly improved symptoms (like reduced shortness of breath and fatigue). Hawthorn extract may even prove to be as effective as low doses of ACE inhibitors (a leading class of heart medication) in improving symptoms of congestive heart failure. Hawthorne must be taken daily to be affective.
Kelp: Helps to clean and maintain the arteries.
Mistletoe: Used as a cardiac tonic to stimulate circulation, reduce blood pressure and arteriosclerosis and strengthen capillary walls. Constricts blood vessels and stimulates heart beat.
Motherwort: Improves blood flow circulation and reduces heart blood pressure and palpitations.
Myrrh: Quickens the hearts action.
Olive Leaf Extract: Naturally support the circulatory and immune systems.
Saw Palmetto has been clinically proven to inhibit the enzyme
involved in converting testosterone into dihydrotestosterone. These
powerful berries from the saw palmetto palm tree, improve urine flow
and decrease inflammation of the prostate gland. Take 160 mg, twice

The mysterious and amazing healing power of water has been utilized for centuries.
Water cleanses, refreshes and restores all life. We are always drawn to water. Be it a soothing fountain or majestic waterfall. Water is a carrier. It flows. It moves along the line of least resistance to find its way to the ocean where comes and goes in the ebb and flow of tides and waves. The appeal is inexplicable! We crave water, maybe because our bodies are made up of a large percent of it. Maybe because we instinctively know how it can heal us.
Hydrotherapy is the use of water in any form, in the treatment of dis-ease. Hydrotherapy was used by the ancient Greek physicians. The use of baths for such purposes as well as for religious purification, personal cleanliness, and private or social relaxation dates from at least the time of ancient Greece. A German, Vincenz Priessnitz, popularized the use of spas in Germany and elsewhere in Europe, where they are still popular today.
Hydrotherapy has a number of uses. Warm water will relax spasm; thus, hydrotherapy has been useful in treating such conditions as muscular strains and sprains, muscular fatigue, and backache. Heat is often used in conjunction with massage or other manipulative or stimulative treatments, such as the whirlpool bath. Sitz baths (sitting in hot water) are effective in the treatment of many disorders. Water is also useful in physical therapy because patients who exercise in a buoyant medium can move weak parts of their bodies without contending with the strong force of gravity.
Contrasting bath of hot then cold water is a great treatment rejuvenate the body. Taking a contrasting shower is even better. Make sure you end with cold water! Pay attention to under the arms, top of the head, mid back and groin region.
For a relaxing bath, as the tub fills with water add 2 spoons of Angel's Mist Deep Soak Sea Salts to the bath water for a soothing, tension relieving soak.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)
is the oldest, continually practiced, and professionally administered health care system in the world. It is a documented medical system spanning over 2,500 years based on comprehensive philosophies, rational theories, clinically tested and empirically verified by over 100 generations of highly educated practitioners. Chinese Medicine is a total system of internal medicine which is comprised of a diagnostic procedure based on signs, symptoms and treatment styles including acupuncture, herbal medicine, exercise, diet and meditation. It's foundation is based on the principles of balance; the interdependent relationship of Yin and Yang. Through this balance, health is achieved and maintained.
Traditional Chinese Medicine looks at any disease through a signs and symptoms and then groups them into certain patterns.
Acupuncture and herbal medicine are effective therapies for the treatment of many issues a man mgith experience throughout his lifetime. Acupuncture redirects your energy (Qi) into a more balanced flow. It provides support to the underlying energetic spheres affected by aging, lack of libido, circulation and the pituitary-hypothalamus-axis.
In Eastern medicine the kidneys are looked at as an entire system, not just an anatomical object. The "energy" of the kidney system encompasses not only the physical traits of regulating blood, waste products and water metabolism, but dominates reproduction growth and development. The kidney system is the producer of marrow (or essence), dominates water metabolism working in conjunction with the urinary bladder and the lungs. The kidney "system" in Eastern medicine is the dominant force in our life vitality. They share a corresponding emotional connection (fear), tissues (the ears), sensory organ (bones) and element (water). As we age, the energy of the kidneys decline. Since the kidneys are associated with our essence, they are the main organs treated during menopause. Kidney disorders are generally of a cold and or deficient nature. Therefore, tonifying and moistening the kidneys is the primary approach.
The bladder along with the kidneys form an important pair. As they are anatomically connected through the ureters, the bladder not only excretes waste material but also is a temporary receptacle for vital fluid retention and transformation. The bladder functions largely at its optimum when the kidneys are normal, strong and healthy. Therefore, water is metabolized properly and the storage and excretion of waste through the bladder, is related to the general function of the kidneys.
Formulations of Eastern Medicinals
The majority of the world's population has used herbal treatments as front line medicine before recorded history, and is still the most widely utilized medical system in the world today.
Herbs are the medicinals in holistic medicine. Chinese herbs are specifically used to create decoctions or "teas" and are a very powerful part of healing dis-ease. Herbal decoctions can also be given in "tea pills", tinctures, and granules or as an external patch, compress or bath. Chinese herbal medicine uses several hundred substances, mostly of plant origin (roots, seeds, flowers, twigs, crystals, bones and barks). These are hardly ever prescribed singly. They are combined into a formula, which usually contains between 8 and 12 ingredients. It is the "herbal synergy" that seems to be the strength behind Chinese herbal formulas. The exact combination is adjusted to suit the patient's individual condition, and is likely to be altered as the treatment progresses to take account of changes that have occurred. It is therefore a very flexible system, which can be closely developed to the needs of the patient. Adverse reactions to herbs are extremely rare and are negligible when compared to those commonly produced by pharmaceutical drugs.
The methodology behind an herb's function, indication, contraindication, preparation and use are numerous. Herbs are categorized according to their properties, taste, temperature and their "herbal synergy" is created by using a dominant (chief herb) with a deputy, assistants and envoy herbs in a combination to produce a better effect on one particular organ or condition. The chief herb "rules" the prescription and has the primary effect on the disease condition. The deputy and assistant herbs help to synergistically increase the effect of the chief herb, to treat an illness, as well as, "supervise" the function of other herbs.
Herbs are categorized according to their properties. By doing this, it allows an herbologist to more efficiently utilize the power behind an herb to its fullest. This is why the "herbal synergy" that seems to be the strength behind Chinese herbal formulas, is the major difference behind any other form of herbal medicine. The exact combination of herbs can constantly be adjusted to suit the patient's individual condition, and is likely to be altered as the treatment progresses to take into account the changes that have occurred.
A Differential Diagnosis of Symptoms
The Eastern approach to treating any disorder is by treating the root of the problem. Branch treatments (treating just the symptoms one sees) are the equivalent to putting a band-aid on a broken bone. Treating perimenopause and menopause requires an in depth look at signs and symptoms, past medical history, family medical history and every symptom or sign, even if it does not seem related to the current problem.
When differentiating such symptoms, it is important to realize which are the most dominant set of symptoms and which are secondary. Not everyone would have all symptoms in one category. They may have a few in one category and a few in another. The more dominant or most symptoms from one category is usually the predominant deficiency. Once you can identify the more predominant deficiency then it is easier to pinpoint remedy-specific formulations to treat and tonify the situation.
Additional underlying patterns that aggravate the above symptoms include Dampness (being overweight, difficulty getting out of bed in the morning, a feeling of heaviness in the body) Vital Energy (Qi) Stagnation (tiredness, fatigue, listless speech) or Blood Stasis (sharp stabbing pains anywhere in the body, poor circulation)
Herb and Drug Interactions
Recent concerns over the past few years about herb and drug interactions have come to light. The reality of many of these situations has to do more with the abuse, overdosing and inappropriate use than anything else. The nature of herb-drug interactions is not a chemical interaction between a drug and an herb producing toxicity, it is the interactions of an herbal component causing either an increase or decrease in the amount of a drug in the blood stream.
A decrease in the amount of drug could occur by herb components binding up the drug and preventing it from getting into the blood or by stimulating the production and activity of enzymes that lower the active ingredients in a drug making the drug ineffective; an increase in drug dosage could make it reach levels that produce side effects.
In Eastern medicine, it is sometimes useful for herbs to be combined with drugs. These combinations are based on theories or evidence about using particular herbs with certain drugs. There are several studies from prominent Chinese hospitals, which show how certain herbs reduce the side effects of drugs and help them to perform their function better; in turn, drugs will make an herb formula work more strongly and quickly. Since these combinations are up to the professional, it is to prove a point that drug and herbal combinations are not always a detriment. That great benefit can come from this research.
For the consumer, taking herbs internally can have fantastic benefits, especially when prescribed under the guide of a licensed herbalist. If you are prescribed herbs while taking Western medication, the following guidelines apply below.
As a general rule, if you are prescribed herbs while taking other than the Western medication mentioned below, you should take your herbs two hours before or two hours after your Western medication. This window allows for a safe and effective time frame, where no interactions would occur. This is due to the gastro-emptying time in the digestive tract.
Taking Herbs Internally
Herbal medicine is a natural and healing form of therapy that can be very beneficial, long term. There is common sense precautions that must be take when using herbal medicine internally.
*If unusual symptoms occur, stop taking the formula and usually symptoms will disappear rather quickly.
*When also on prescribed Western drugs, great care should be taken. Anti-inflammatory drugs and antibiotics can upset the stomach and irritate the intestinal tract. Herbal formulas can tax the digestive tract. Do not take herbal medicine and anti- inflammatories/antibiotics together at the same time.
*Blood thinners prevent clots from forming in the blood vessels. These are very strong western drugs that must be monitored carefully. Drugs used to thin the blood, often interfere with herbs for trauma, since they both have the same action. The combination can interfere with western drugs and may cause dizziness or fainting. Do not take blood thinning herbal medicine with western blood thinners.
* Heart medications and herbs used for trauma both effect the circulation of blood. Although these herbs have a different method of action, in conjunction with heart medication, there can be unwanted side effects.
*Seizure medications work on brain function and in conjunction with Chinese herbs, should not be taken at the same time and should only be done under supervision.
The Safety of Herbs
There are many excellent companies that subject their herbs to testing more rigorous than the FDA requires. Many of the best known pharmacies and herbal companies work with CMA Testing, an independent, internationally accredited (HOKLAS certified) laboratory to test herbs for heavy metals such as Arsenic, Lead, Mercury, and Cadmium, as well as pesticide residues such as DDT, and Hexochlorobenzene (HCB) related compounds. In addition to meeting international standards, 34 international accrediting bodies, including the American Association for Laboratory Accreditation (A2LA), recognize HOKLAS certification. Through voluntary testing, the best in the industry are helping to raise the industry standard, and ensuring that patients receive only the finest quality herbs. Patented formulations from such reputable companies as Stork Brand, Kan, Crane, Golden Flower are just a few of these reputable companies who manufactured in an internationally certified GMP. Each formulation is batch tested at the manufacturer for heavy metal contents, microbial count, and pesticides. Further, independent testing is done by an internationally recognized laboratory to verify results. All testing standards exceed USP standards in the United States. There is no reason for reservation when seeing a professional herbalist, acupuncture or licensed naturopath who uses reputable sources.

Change is inevitable.
Our lives are made up of the building blocks of change. Change creates the person we must grow to be. Change happens for a reason. That reason is to allow us possibilities we may not have seen in the first place. This can be traumatic or it can be less so.
The single most important point you can make about change is that in most cases it's not what faces you that's the problem, it's how you react to it.
How you react is determined by how you perceive a particular change. The Chinese word for crisis is "weiji". Two characters that separately mean danger and opportunity. Every problem we encounter in life can be viewed that way. It is a chance to show that we can handle it. Changing the way you think, can change a life of stress and discomfort to a life of challenge and excitement.
Change shows itself in many forms. The move to a different career, by choice or not, the loss of a loved one, the loss of a relationship, the move to a new home or simply the change in the weather and how we feel.
It is important to embrace the transition!. Struggling, kicking and screaming and dragging your heals will only prolong trying to control the uncontrollable. Learn to recognize strengths you may have overlooked. Embrace optimism and reform your old belief system. Honor the new you, which you are transforming into. Here are some ways to embrace change:
1. Often, in any situation, we must take the quiet time to be with ourselves to observe this change. How is it going to effect me? Better yet, how am I going to let it effect me? What am I going to do to get through this? Allow the answers to come to you in your quiet time.
2. Take Everything one day at a time. Sometimes situations can become overwhelming when looking at the big picture. Again, take your quiet time to observe the moment. Allow yourself to take all the time, take the space that you need to grasp the change.
3. Breath. Deep breathing allows us to open our chest and expand. It clears our minds and bodies of toxins and should be used as a tool for change. Allow the breathe to cleanse you and make room for change. Make room for something different.
4. Support. We are always put at ease when we have support behind us. In these vulnerable moments, we can find strength in others. If you have a good friend, a family member, a loved one or a community group that you can turn to, do so. Be sure that this support comes from a positive, unbiased source. Otherwise, it can be more damaging than good. Rest assure, there have been others who have gone through what you are experiencing right now. See if you can take away with you some of their positive pearls of wisdom.
5. Love Yourself. You are the true source to your own happiness. You have to live within yourself. You have to be at peace within yourself. Only you can do that. Only you can make that happen. We each have our own way of being with ourselves, but there is only one way to be at ease with your soul. That is to love yourself, always.
6. Our Belief System is one of the major factors that can get us through situations or can cause our life to crumble around us! I do believe that there is a lot of innate goodness and balancing our minds do subconsciously to get us through hard times. The other portion of this is how we "program" ourselves to deal with any given situation.
7. Let go of Ego. Embracing peace of mind, optimism, the ability to forgive, and a sense of humor are all good ways to allow the ego to step aside and make room for some humble pie.
8. Allow Emotional Release. Identifying, expressing, experiencing, and accepting all of our feelings is your doorway to accepting all change in your life.
9. Be Flexible. You have a rigid, mind set about work, relationships, kids or lifestyle. Learn a lesson from the willow tree and its ability to bend in the great wind. Where as, when we are rigid like the old oak tree, we can easily break apart under the stress of change. Learn to relax and follow the path unfolding before you.
10. Their Is No Security in something that is irrelevant or no longer has meaning. When we let go of the familiar, we have the power to embrace the new. Embrace it!
CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle hands-on method of evaluating and enhancing the function of the craniosacral system - the physiological body system comprised of the membranes and CSF or cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord.
CST enhances the body's natural healing processes to improve the operation of the central nervous system, dissipate the negative effects of stress, enhance health and strengthen resistance to disease. The method generally requires only a very gentle touch to test for restrictions in various parts of the craniosacral system. Often the evaluation alone will help solve the presenting problem. Among the dis-ease conditions for which
CranioSacral Therapy for men; corrects skeletal mis-alignment and relieves lower back pain, headaches and poor sleep. Assists in connecting not only on a physical level, but on an emotional one as well.
SomatoEmotional Release (SER) is a therapeutic process that helps rid the body and mind of the residual effects of past trauma and associated negative responses. Its origins date to the discovery in the late 1970's by John E. Upledger, DO, OMM, and biophysicist Zvi Karni, PhD, that the body often retains rather than dissipates physical forces resulting from an accident, injury or emotional trauma. The trauma causes the body to isolate the dysfunctional area, creating what Dr. Upledger has termed an "Energy Cyst".
Although a reasonably healthy body can work and adapt to Energy Cysts, extra energy is required to perform normal bodily functions. As years pass, the adaptive pattern of the body loses its effectiveness. Symptoms and dysfunctions begin to appear that become increasingly difficult to ignore or suppress.
Yoga poses can be good alternatives to "traditional" health remedies because they relax the body and mind, improve circulation and respiration, reduce tension and help the body through it's healing process.
Men's Health:
Yoga Therapy can be very beneficial for men. Issues concerning men such as flexibility, excessive behavior, anxiety, depression, addiction, insomnia, mood swings, fatigue, osteoporosis, circulation issues and heart health.
Yoga is a great remedy for all of these symptoms as yoga can be restorative, protective, energizing, calming, connective and can make this time of transition a spiritual and regenerating practice!
The Yogic breath exercise can be done without instruction, without danger, and with a good chance that your discomfort and stressful feelings will be reduced. Relaxation Breath is the most powerful tool for stress management.
Sit up, with your back straight in any position.
Place your tongue against the ridge of tissue just behind your upper front teeth and keep it there throughout the exercise.
Exhale completely through your mouth.
Close your mouth and inhale quietly through your nose to a mental count of four.
Hold your breath for a count of seven.
Exhale completely through your mouth, to a count of eight. Repeat this cycle three more times for a total of four breaths. Try to do this breathing exercise at least twice a day. You can repeat the whole sequence as often as you wish, but don't do it more than four breaths at one time for the first month of practice. This exercise is fairly intense and has a profound effect on the nervous system.
Deep Diaphram Breath
Sit with your legs crossed in a comfortable position. Breathe slowly and evenly from your diaphragm, through your nose. Fill your lower abdomen, lungs, then chest with air. Hold for a four count then slowly exhale the air out from your chest, lungs, then lower abdomen. Repeat 3 or 4 times. That's it! Just allow your shoulders to drop and your face relax as you breath, deep.
This passive exercise uses gravity and the weight of your body. Take a bath towel and fold it the long way. Then roll it up into a tight roll. Lie on the floor or your yoga mat and place the roll under your neck. Make sure the back of your head is touching the floor or mat. Your neck is now supported. Now all you do is simply relax your neck and body. Take several l-o-n-g, s-l-o-w, d-e-e-p breaths. With each breath, allow your neck and shoulders to release all their tension. Relax here for about 15-20 minutes.
Also consider Breath Exercises, Mountain Pose, Child's Pose, Cat, Head to Knee, Knee to Chest, Laying Down Twist, Standing and Seated Forward Bends, Standing Back Bends, Fish Pose..
Meditation is a time-honored technique that can take you into infinite dimensions of consciousness. One major principle to meditation is in the ability to completely quiet your mind. Quieting the mind comes as a result of meditating over a long period of time, but any time you are looking within, you are meditating.
There are many meditation methods. Some are passive and others are active -- not in the physical sense, but in the sense that you actually do something during meditation. Meditators learn to focus their awareness and direct it onto an object: the breath, a phrase or word: a mantra, repeated silently, a memorized inspirational phrase, an image in the mind's eye. Researchers have documented immediate benefits in terms of lowered blood pressure, decreased heart and respiratory rate, increased blood flow, and other measurable signs of the relaxation response.
Meditation will calm an agitated mind, creating optimal physical and mental health, undo our sense of separateness, which is the common root of fear and misery, unify consciousness, putting us in touch with our higher self and connect us to higher consciousness. Meditation restructures the mind, allowing us to achieve our full potential as human beings.
Progressive Relaxation is just that. A slow transition from a tense, immobile state to a calmer more supple mind and body. This is a way of releasing tension in the muscles. There are many variations of Progressive Relaxation. Here is one of them:
Begin by laying on your back in a comfortable position.
Take a series of deep slow breaths and then focus your awareness on different parts of the body in turn, becoming aware of any muscular tension and releasing it.
One way to do this is to first tense a muscle deliberately and then relax it.
You can start with the top of the body, tensing and relaxing the muscles of the upper face, then moving on to the jaw, neck, chest, front of the arms, abdomen, thighs, lower legs, feet, and toes.
Then do the same down the back of the body. Finally, lie still with the eyes closed, concentrating on your breath. Allow the whole body to relax into the ground. Feel the floor underneath you, supporting you. Feel the earth supporting the floor. Feel yourself now deeply rooted and grounded into the earth beneath you.
Enjoy this deep feeling of peace and freedom from muscular tension.

Vibrational medicine, which validates that everything in the universe is in a state of vibration and the frequency at which an object or person most naturally vibrates is called resonance. The chakras, bones, and organs in the body all possess a different resonant frequency. When an organ or part of the body is vibrating out of tune or nonharmoniously, it is called "dis ease" or disease. A body is in a healthy state of being when each cell, each organ creates a resonance that is in harmony with the whole being.

The Male Connection: Lower Chakra technique: this technique is applied to bring the energy down from the head and ground it. Place an amethyst on the Third Eye Chakra, lapis at the Throat Chakra, carnelian at the Sacral/Spleen Chakra and smoky quartz at the Root Chakra. Relax with this configuration for about 15-20 minutes.
Reconnecting to the Heart Chakra: It is related to love and is the integrator of opposites in the psyche: mind and body, male and female, persona and shadow, ego and unity. A healthy fourth chakra allows us to love deeply, feel compassion, have a deep sense of peace and centeredness. The color for this chakra is green or pink. This chakra deals with physical healing, balance, harmony, compassion and love. The heart chakra is located near the heart. This chakra is most important in all facets of love, when it is balanced, you trust in others, take risks, love and feel loved. Physically, it governs the thymus gland, heart, blood, circulatory system and the immune and endocrine systems. To help activate this chakra, eat lots of green vegetables, surround yourself in nature, especially trees and plants. The symbol of this chakra is the Crescent.
