Dream Therapy

Some of mankind's greatest creations, ideas and inventions have all been attributed to the attempts of interpreting and understanding dreams. Visions of symbols, words, objects and people whom appear during sleep cycles can give us many messages. In any particular culture, the meaning of dreams can vary in their vision and interpretation. One book, "Oneirocritia", was written by Artemidorus- a Roman philosopher in the 2nd century A.D., has served as the foundation of many other dream interpretation books.

Psychologist Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud, who have both embrassed the important significance of dream interpretation, have given credit to Artemidorus' work.

Freud, the father of psychoanalysis, interpreted people's dreams in order to help them unearth hidden feelings. Jung, a Swiss psychologist, who initially followed in Freud's footsteps, developed theories of Anima (women) and Animus (men) involving the feminine and masculine principles and the collective unconscious symbols known as Archetypes.

Archtypes such as falling, flying, colors and numbers all take on a universal meaning, as well as, specific significance to cultures and the individual dreamer.

With the advancement of science in the 1950's, many studies and theories were summarized on the physiological aspect of dreams. The discoveries of REM (rapid eye movement) and NREM (non rapid eye movement), which are the brain's electrical activities during sleep, became apparent.

REM cycles four to five times a night during sleep and lasts less than 30 minutes per cycle for the first cycle but increases in length as each cycle progresses. This is the period when dreams occur. The other sleep cycles are spent in NREM sleep without dreaming.

Through extensive research, it was also discovered that birds and nearly all mammals, including newborn babies, experience REM sleep. People with emotional disturbances, those who have suffered trauma, and highly stressed individuals, seem to increase their dream time.

Dream Catcher

To Native Americans, dreams were messages sent by sacred spirits. Dreamcatchers are an authentic Native American tradition, from the Ojibway (Chippewa) tribe. The people would tie sinew strands in a web around a small round or tear-shaped frame in a similar pattern to how they tied webbing for Ojibway snowshoes--and hang this "dream-catcher" as a charm to protect sleeping children from nightmares. According to legend, the hole in the center of a dream catcher web allows good dreams to reach the sleeper, while the web itself traps the bad dreams until they disappear with the first light of morning. Enjoy these beautifully hand crafted dream catchers and may all your dreams come true!

Crystals Associated with Dreams

Some of the most amazing tools for healing, are the treasures the earth provides us! Crystals and Gemstones are one of the most beautiful, mystical and profound "energy medicine" tools, which have been used for centuries throughout all cultures, religions and empires. Andrew suggests these crystals for dreaming:

Amethyst - This stone, whose color represents the transition from day to night, can also be very helpful in helping one to relax and go to sleep. This is the stone for Dream recall. Stone of spirituality, contentment, meditation. Provides common sense, flexibility in decisions.

Hematite - is the most grounding and protective stone (Root Chakra.) Condenses scatteredness, fuzziness into mental clarity, concentration, memory, practicality, helps study, bookkeeping, detail work, sound sleep. Helps one regroup after jet lag, stress, birth, anesthesia and dreaming.

Herkimer Diamond - is one of the best crystals for dream recall. Shifts brain powerfully into alpha/deep stillness, opening the Brow and Crown Chakra for a strong, clear channel, psychic readings, meditation. The "Dream stone" - in meditation or pillow, it wonderfully enhances visualization, astral travel into the light and dream recall. Amplifies and stores thoughts, energy; use as bridge to stimulate energy flow up through the Chakra.

Moldavite - deepens dreams. As this stone is a psychic cleanser, it may also be very helpful for dreams which help to release psychic toxins. This stone is an excellent amplifying stone and can enhance the properties of other crystals.

Rhodochrosite - is good if you go to sleep or wake up feeling anxious. Gentle, yet probably the most vibrant loving stone to heal the Heart Chakra, especially for giving/receiving love. "Stone of Love and Balance". Also for loneliness, loss, heartache, fear, insecurities, inner-child issues, abuse, incest...Helps self-forgiveness, deservingness and trust issues, spiritual-and self-love, desire to live, purpose.

Dream Research and PET Scans

There has been a lot of research done on dreams and dreaming. The research I focused on was the work done with the PET scan. (1) The Positron Emissions Tornography have been used to measure various rates of blood flow through the brain.

There is basically two major Phases in Sleep. NREM - non rapid eye movement and REM - rapid eye movement. NREM sleep is the beginning of the sleep cycle. In NREM, the average brain activity decreases - proportionately the rate of blood flow decreases.

So areas such as the Reticular Activating System which is the area involved in arousal and wakening, shuts down. Areas involved in muscle movement shut down. But, regions involved in the consolidation and retrieval of memory did not decrease in blood flow, but the pathways that bring information to and from this region did shut down, therefore isolating them metabolically.

About 90 minutes into our sleep pattern we experience REM sleep. REM sleep is produced by the excretion of Acetylcholine in the Pons. (2) Suddenly, the Brain Stem begins firing electrical impulses through the brain. Heightening breath, heart rate and sexual arousal and sends impulses through the cortical and subcortical regions. Some regions of the brain's metabolic rates wind up being higher than when we are awake.

An area of gray matter, located at the Occipito-Temporo-Parital junction is activated. This is where the brain performs the highest level of processing of perceptual information.

Our emotional brain - The Limbic System increases with blood flow and our memory and sensory processes connected to simple vision and hearing in the Diencephelon and Medulla increase but the Primary Visual Cortex region in the Occipital Lobe did not show much of an increase in blood flow. Normally, an increase in activity in the lower areas cannot occur without an increase in the Primary Visual Cortex.

But, in REM sleep, the brain will activate the lower areas and begin integration of visual patterns. This is what is speculated to be the make-up of imagery and symbols in our dreams. (3)

The Prefrontal Cortex, which is divided into four regions, plays a central role in our self-discipline, gratification restrainment and controlling one's impulses. This region is typically inactive during REM sleep. except for one of the four regions. This is the deep white matter of the frontal lobe with large fiber pathways which transmit the chemical Neurotransmitter Dopamine from the Mid Brain to the Frontal Cortex.

So with the Limbic emotional brain extremely active and the self-disciplinary Prefrontal Cortex mostly inactive, it is believed to be the reason why we have such disinhibiting dreams (4) such as flying, falling and fantasies.

Dreams and the Brain Stem

In recent studies, the brain stem, the portion of the brain at the base of the skull, is the originator of electrical impulses in which, dreams are the result. The brain stem makes contact with the other portions of the brain that control hearing, movement, vision and memory. Several studies have implicated that the limbic portion of the brain, which activates our emotions, may also receive impulses from the brain stem. The brain stem contains cells that turn REM sleep on and off. These studies have been based on the use of Positron Emission Tomography (PET scans) of the brain.

Considering the brain as the main sorter of information, it tries taking random information from both our conscious and subconscious levels and attempts to impose patterns on the unpatterned stimuli.

"Making order out of chaos is a highly innate behavior" says Martin Seligman, professor of psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania. "Humans are creatures of order".

Dream analysist and scientist, Allan Hobson, along with a large number of the population, believe that dreams do, in fact, "have meaning and reveal truths about ourselves".

The left brain, which controls the right side of the body, perceives the world through the language of deductive reasoning and logic. Analyzing all things in a linear sequence of cause and effect. The left brain is responsible for speech, writing understanding mathematics, numbers and language. The left brain reacts as though it knows we are thinking, therefore, taking on the role of our conscious thought.

The right brain, which controls the left side of the body, perceives the world as the big picture. The overall aesthetics, our creativity, metaphorical language and the way we register symbols is the job of the right brain. The right brain seems to take on the role of our unconscious thought. Dreams, which are symbolic in nature, are created using the symbolic side of the right brain. But, it is the left brain that seems to interpret these symbols of our dreams in an analytical sense.

Often times, right brain oriented symbols in our dreams, from this unconscious thought region, are called "thoughts from our higher self." Learning to pay attention to these symbols and interpreting them on a conscious level, can be the first step in getting in touch with our higher selves. By applying the symbolic language of dream interpretation to our everyday lives, we maybe able to see further into the connection between these dreams and seemingly random events.

By connecting these seemingly random events between the conscious body and the subconscious mind, we can see how happenings that seem accidental, maybe symbolic messages from our higher selves. This connection between meaningful coincidence was noted by psychiatrist, Carl Jung, which he called "synchronicity".

Dreams and Color

When it comes to dreaming in color or black and white, science is still divided. Some scientists believe that 80% of our dreams are in color. They believe that these dreams of color happen later in the sleep cycle while black and white dreams occur earlier in the sleep stage. Others believe we never dream in black and white and believe that it is biologically impossible.

The colors in dreams convey different ideas based on our cultural differences. Although, universal dreams occur in all cultures, they express different meanings. Symbolism, (that right brain activity), color and interpretation are ultimately best transcribed by the individual. Some of the folklore on the symbolism of color and dreams can be an interesting discovery. Below is a list of color and their interpretations.

*White- success, awakening of spirituality, higher self learning.
*Dark Purple- success in social affairs, psychic ability, clarity.
*Lavender- temporary unhappiness or dissapointment.
*Blue- freedom from worry, help from others.
*Green- travel or news, knowledge, understanding, learning, peace.
*Pink- success, softness, flowing love, lack of fear.
*Yellow- setback or struggle, and happiness or new beginnings.
*Orange- Increased awareness, an urge to hurry or delay.
*Red- rage, anxiety, increased self-esteem, warning, controlling.
*Brown- luck with money, abundance, fullness or confusion.
*Black- trouble or difficulties.
*Multicolored- increased sense of security.

Remember, this is a guideline. As in life and regards to our circumstances, "everythng is relative" ~one thing can only be looked at in relationship to something else. Several of the colors have dual meanings which makes the interpretation even more subjective. It is always a good idea to look at ideas or concepts in pairs. In the way they may relate or not, to one another. Keep an open mind. An open mind allows ideas and images to soar with freedom and may increase our understanding that much more!

Nightmares

Nightmares are very common among children and fairly common among adults. Often nightmares are caused by stress, traumatic experiences, emotional difficulties, drugs or medication, or illness. However, some people have frequent nightmares that seem unrelated to their waking lives. Recent studies suggest that these people tend to be more open, sensitive, trusting, and emotional than average.

Dream Journals

Dream Journals are a book or record of your past dreams. They can be used for writing down dreams you have experienced during sleep or often people will even write down there day dreams too! These journals are good places to record your information so that you can go back and look at this information later. It can allow you to look at that information for interpretation and dream analysis.

TIPS FOR DREAM JOURNALING

1. Upon waking, pick up your dream journal and write down the first thing that comes into your head.
2. It is a good idea to write out the dream in the symbols you saw for easier interpreting later.
3. After you have written down as many symbols as you can recall, try to fill in the information between the symbols.
4. Jot down significant words, objects or people that were in your dream.
5. What is the association with these objects, words or people. Explain in your journal.
6. Take as much room as you like in your book. It is a creative work in process.
7. If there were colors, write them down. Was it day or night? Did it take place in a familiar place or some place you have never been?
8. If you can't recall all the details, that is ok. You can always come back to the journal later.
9. Be sure and write the time and day on the top of the dream page.
10. Have sweet dreams!

Frequently Asked Questions

Does everyone dream?

Yes. Laboratory studies have shown that we experience our most vivid dreams during a type of sleep called Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep. During REM sleep the brain is very active, the eyes move back and forth rapidly under the lids, and the large muscles of the body are relaxed. REM sleep occurs every 90 - 100 minutes, 3 to 4 times a night, and lasts longer as the night progresses. The final REM period may last as long as 45 minutes. Less vivid dreams occur at other times during the night.

Recurrent dreams, which can continue for years, may be treated as any other dream. That is, one may look for parallels between the dream and the thoughts, feelings, behavior, and motives of the dreamer. Understanding the meaning of the recurrent dream sometimes can help the dreamer resolve an issue that he or she has been struggling with for years.

Is it true that if you dream that you die or that you hit bottom in a falling dream, you will in fact die in your sleep?

No. These beliefs are not true. Many people have dreamed that they died or hit bottom in a fall and they have lived to tell the tale! You can explore the meaning of these kinds of images just as you would explore any others that might occur in your dreams. However, if any aspect of your dreams worries or distresses you, talk to a professional mental health practitioner about your concerns.

Can dreams predict the future?

There are many examples of dreams that seemed to predict future events. Some may have been due to coincidence, faulty memory, or an unconscious tying together of known information. A few laboratory studies have been conducted of predictive dreams, as well as clairvoyant and telepathic dreams, but the results were varied, as these kinds of dreams are difficult to study in a laboratory setting.

Is it possible to control dreams?

You often can influence your dreams by giving yourself pre-sleep suggestions. Another method of influencing dreams is called lucid dreaming, in which you are aware you are dreaming while still asleep and in the dream. sometimes people experience this type of dreaming spontaneously. It is often possible to learn how to increase lucid dreaming, and thereby increase your capacity to affect the course of the dream events as they unfold. Some things are easier than others to control, and indeed complete control is probably never possible. Some professional dream workers question the advisability of trying to control the dream, and encourage learning to enjoy and understand it instead.

Best Sleep Tips

1. Sleep. That wonderful but sometimes elusive state of bliss and rejuvenation! I think it is most important to go to sleep with a "Quiet Mind". Sometimes this is difficult to do. We all have trouble now and then. Sometimes, we are even afraid of knowing that we have to go to sleep.

2. Fear can be an underlining problem in many cases. There are many ways to quiet the mind. Doing 15 to 30 minutes of meditation or yoga can be very helpful. You must allow yourself to be distracted or get into your meditation or yoga and "let go" of the days thoughts...see Yoga/Meditation.

3. Try tiring yourself out during the day, so that by the time you are ready for bed you are yearning for that pillow! Try exercise during the day to exhaust the muscles and mind. The moving is good when we are depressed too! It gets the blood flowing and makes us move past many issues. Pack your day with lots to do. Errands, class, shopping...whatever you can find to keep you busy.

4. Valerian Root is a wonderful, natural sleep assistanting herb.
Herbal Tea, half hour before bed, is wonderful for relaxing the digestive system if you are nervous or upset. Chamomile is great for this as well as Kava and Hops. Try brewing these herbs seperate or even together for a wonderful prescription for sleep!See Herbal Remedies

5. Reading a book before bed is also good. This can direct your mind to a different place.

6. Diffusing essential oils of Lavender, Chamomile, or Clary Sage are all wonderful to induce a relaxed state and the soothing scents will calm your senses. See Aromatherapy

7. If you are taking a pain killer, be careful for many pain relievers actually have caffiene in them. Perhaps you may want to consider Willow Bark for pain.

8. Remember, we choose our thoughts, our thoughts do not choose us. Believe that this is so. To Believe is a powerful thing. The Universe supports ALL that WE CHOOSE to Believe. So do not torture your mind with troubled thoughts which will not allow you to sleep and are only distructive in the long run. See Belief Systems.

9. Block out light. To increase the quality of your sleep, research has shown that by blocking out light in your bedroom, you can improve your sleep pattern. If you can see your hand in front of your face, after the lights are off, then it is light enough to affect melatonin production. Melatonin is a hormone secreted at night by the pineal gland. The pineal gland is a small organ in the brain sensitive to light levels.

10. Eat Earlier. Eat at least three hours before bedtime. The further away you eat from the time you go to sleep, the better it is for you to have a better night's sleep.
